When he raised his eyes and looked, behold, three ^emen were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed down to the ground,

Please let a little water be brought and ^hwash ▼

your feet, and make yourselves comfortable under the tree;

Man soll ein wenig Wasser bringen, und wascht eure Füße; und lasst euch nieder unter dem Baum,

and I will ▼

^kbring a piece of bread, so that you may ▼

refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have ▼

▼Lit come to

visited your servant.” And they said, “So do as you have said.”

so will ich einen Bissen Brot bringen, dass ihr euer Herz stärkt; danach mögt ihr weiterziehen, denn darum seid ihr bei eurem Knecht vorbeigekommen. Sie sprachen: Tue, wie du gesagt hast!

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “ ▼

Quickly, prepare three ▼

▼Heb seah; one seah is about 7 qt. or 7.7 liters

measures of fine flour, knead it, and make bread cakes.”

Und Abraham eilte in das Zelt zu Sarah und sprach: Nimm rasch drei Maß Feinmehl, knete sie und backe Brotfladen!

Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and ▼

choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it.

Abraham aber lief zu den Rindern und holte ein zartes und gutes Kalb und gab es dem Knecht; der eilte und bereitete es zu.

He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree ▼

as they ate.

Und er trug Butter und Milch auf und von dem Kalb, das er zubereitet hatte, und setzte es ihnen vor. Und er stand bei ihnen unter dem Baum; und sie aßen.

Then they said to him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” And he said, “There, in the tent.”

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist deine Frau Sarah? Er antwortete: Drinnen im Zelt .

He said, “ ^sI will certainly return to you ▼

▼Lit when the time revives

at this time next year; and behold, your wife Sarah will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.

Da sprach er: Gewiss will ich um diese Zeit im künftigen Jahr wieder zu dir kommen, und siehe, deine Frau Sarah soll einen Sohn haben! Sarah aber horchte am Eingang des Zeltes, der hinter ihm war.

Now ^uAbraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was ^vpast ▼

childbearing.

Und Abraham und Sarah waren alt und recht betagt, sodass es Sarah nicht mehr nach der Weise der Frauen ging.

So Sarah laughed ▼

to herself, saying, “ ^yAfter I have become old, am I to have pleasure, my ^zlord being old also?”

Darum lachte sie in ihrem Herzen und sprach: Nachdem ich verblüht bin, soll mir noch Wonne zuteilwerden! Dazu ist mein Herr ein alter Mann!

But the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I actually give birth to a child, when I am so old?’

Da sprach der Herr zu Abraham: Warum lacht Sarah und spricht: »Sollte ich wirklich noch gebären, so alt ich bin?«

difficult for the Lord? At the ^acappointed time I will return to you, ▼

at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

Sollte denn dem Herrn etwas zu wunderbar sein? Zur bestimmten Zeit will ich wieder zu dir kommen im nächsten Jahr, und Sarah wird einen Sohn haben!

Sarah denied it, however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

Da leugnete Sarah und sprach: Ich habe nicht gelacht!, denn sie fürchtete sich. Er aber sprach: Doch, du hast gelacht!

Then ^aethe men rose up from there, and looked down toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them to send them off.

Da brachen die Männer auf und wandten sich nach Sodom. Und Abraham ging mit ihnen, um sie zu begleiten.

^afThe Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham ^agwhat I am about to do,

Da sprach der Herr: Sollte ich Abraham verbergen, was ich tun will?

since Abraham will certainly become a great and ▼

▼Or populous

mighty nation, and in him ^aiall the nations of the earth will be blessed?

Abraham soll doch gewiss zu einem großen und starken Volk werden, und alle Völker der Erde sollen in ihm gesegnet werden.

For I have ▼

▼Lit known

^akchosen him, so that he may ^alcommand his children and his household after him to ^amkeep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham ^anwhat He has spoken about him.”

Denn ich habe ihn ersehen, dass er seinen Kindern und seinem Haus nach ihm gebiete, den Weg des Herrn zu bewahren, indem sie Gerechtigkeit und Recht üben, damit der Herr auf Abraham kommen lasse, was er ihm verheißen hat.

And the Lord said, “ ^aoThe outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.

Und der Herr sprach: Das Geschrei über Sodom und Gomorra ist groß, und ihre Sünde ist sehr schwer.

I will ^apgo down now and see whether they have done entirely as the outcry, which has come to Me indicates; and if not, I will know.”

Darum will ich hinabsteigen und sehen , ob sie es wirklich ganz nach dem Geschrei über sie getrieben haben, das vor mich gekommen ist, oder ob nicht; ich will es wissen !

Then ^aqthe men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before ^arthe Lord.

Und die Männer wandten ihr Angesicht von dort und gingen nach Sodom; aber Abraham blieb noch stehen vor dem Herrn.

Abraham approached and said, “ ^asWill You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

Und Abraham trat näher und sprach : Willst du auch den Gerechten mit dem Gottlosen wegraffen?

Suppose there are fifty righteous people within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not ▼

▼Or forgive

spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?

Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt; willst du die wegraffen und den Ort nicht verschonen um der fünfzig Gerechten willen, die darin sind?

Far be it from You to do ▼

▼Lit like this thing

such a thing, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not ^avthe Judge of all the earth ▼

▼Lit do justice

deal justly?”

Das sei ferne von dir, dass du eine solche Sache tust und den Gerechten tötest mit dem Gottlosen, dass der Gerechte sei wie der Gottlose. Das sei ferne von dir! Sollte der Richter der ganzen Erde nicht gerecht richten?

So the Lord said, “ ^axIf I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will ▼

▼Or forgive

spare the entire place on their account.”

Der Herr sprach: Wenn ich fünfzig Gerechte in Sodom finde, in der Stadt, so will ich um ihretwillen den ganzen Ort verschonen!

And Abraham replied, “Now behold, I have ▼

▼Or resolved

ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am only ^badust and ashes.

Und Abraham antwortete und sprach: Ach siehe, ich habe es gewagt, mit dem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich nur Staub und Asche bin!

Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the entire city because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

Vielleicht gibt es fünf weniger als fünfzig Gerechte darin; willst du denn die ganze Stadt verderben um der fünf willen? Er sprach: Wenn ich darin fünfundvierzig finde, so will ich sie nicht verderben!

And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose forty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.”

Und er fuhr weiter fort mit ihm zu reden und sprach: Vielleicht finden sich vierzig darin. Er aber sprach: Ich will ihnen nichts tun um der vierzig willen!

Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Und Abraham sprach: Möge es [meinen] Herrn nicht erzürnen, wenn ich noch weiter rede! Vielleicht finden sich dreißig darin. Er aber sprach: Wenn ich dreißig darin finde, so will ich ihnen nichts tun!

And he said, “Now behold, I have ▼

▼Or resolved

ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.”

Und er sprach: Ach siehe, ich habe es gewagt, mit [meinem] Herrn zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich zwanzig darin. Er antwortete: Ich will sie nicht verderben um der zwanzig willen!

Then he said, “ ^bcOh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once: suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.”

Und er sprach: Ach, zürne nicht, [mein] Herr, dass ich nur noch diesmal rede: Vielleicht finden sich zehn darin. Er aber sprach: Ich will sie nicht verderben um der zehn willen!

As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham ^bdthe Lord departed, and Abraham returned to his place.

Und der Herr ging hinweg, als er mit Abraham ausgeredet hatte; Abraham aber kehrte wieder an seinen Ort zurück.

Now the ^betwo angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When ^bfLot saw them, he stood up to meet them and ▼

▼Lit bowed himself

bowed down with his face to the ground.

Und die zwei Engel kamen am Abend nach Sodom. Lot aber saß in Sodom unter dem Tor ; und als er sie sah, stand er auf, ging ihnen entgegen und verneigte sich, das Angesicht zur Erde gewandt,

And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said, “No, but we shall spend the night in the public square.”

und sprach: Siehe, meine Herren! Kehrt ein in das Haus eures Knechtes und bleibt über Nacht und wascht eure Füße; so mögt ihr am Morgen früh aufstehen und euren Weg ziehen! Sie aber sprachen: Nein, sondern wir wollen im Freien übernachten!

Yet he strongly urged them, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; ^biand he prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

Er aber drang sehr in sie. Da kehrten sie bei ihm ein und kamen in sein Haus. Und er bereitete ihnen ein Mahl und machte ungesäuerte Brotfladen; und sie aßen.

Before they lay down, ^bjthe men of the city--the men of Sodom --surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people ▼

▼Or without exception; lit from every end

from every quarter;

Aber ehe sie sich hinlegten, umringten die Männer der Stadt das Haus, die Männer von Sodom , Jung und Alt, das ganze Volk aus allen Enden,

and they called to Lot and said to him, “ ^blWhere are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may ▼

▼Lit know them; i.e., have intercourse

have relations with them.”

und riefen Lot und sprachen zu ihm: Wo sind die Männer, die diese Nacht zu dir gekommen sind? Bring sie heraus zu uns, damit wir uns über sie hermachen!

But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him,

Da ging Lot zu ihnen hinaus an den Eingang und schloss die Tür hinter sich zu.

and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.

Und sprach: Ach, meine Brüder, versündigt euch doch nicht!

Now look, ^bnI have two daughters who have not ▼

▼Lit known man

had relations with any man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them ▼

▼Lit as is good in your sight

whatever you like; only do not do anything to these men, because they have come under the ▼

▼Lit shadow

shelter of my roof.”

Siehe, ich habe zwei Töchter, die haben noch keinen Mann erkannt; die will ich zu euch hinausführen, damit ihr mit ihnen tut, wie es gut ist in euren Augen; nur diesen Männern tut nichts, denn sie sind doch unter den Schatten meines Daches gekommen!

But they said, “Get out of the way!” They also said, “This one came in ▼

▼Lit to sojourn

as a foreigner, and already ^bshe is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them!” So they pressed hard against ▼

▼Lit the man, against Lot

Lot and moved forward to break the door.

Sie aber sprachen: Mach, dass du fortkommst! Und sie sagten: Der ist der einzige Fremdling hier und will den Richter spielen! Nun wollen wir’s mit dir noch schlimmer treiben als mit ihnen! Und sie drangen heftig auf den Mann Lot ein und machten sich daran, die Tür aufzubrechen.

But ^buthe men reached out their ▼

hands and brought Lot into the house ▼

▼Lit to

with them, and shut the door.

Da streckten die Männer ihre Hände hinaus und zogen Lot zu sich hinein und schlossen die Tür zu.

Then ^bxthey struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, from the small to the great, so that they became weary of trying to find the doorway.

Und sie schlugen die Männer vor der Haustür mit Blindheit, Klein und Groß, sodass sie müde wurden, die Tür zu suchen.

Then the two men said to Lot, “Whom else do you have here? A son-in-law and your sons and daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place;

Und die Männer sprachen zu Lot: Hast du noch jemand hier, einen Schwiegersohn oder Söhne oder Töchter? Wer in der Stadt zu dir gehört, den führe hinaus aus diesem Ort!

for we are about to destroy this place, because ^bytheir outcry has become so great before the Lord that ^bzthe Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

Denn wir werden diesen Ort verderben, weil das Geschrei über sie groß ist vor dem Herrn; und der Herr hat uns gesandt, [den Ort] zu verderben!

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who ▼

▼Or had married; lit were taking

were to marry his daughters, and said, “Up, ^cbget out of this place, for the Lord is destroying the city.” ^ccBut he appeared to his sons-in-law ▼

▼Lit like one who was joking

to be joking.

Da ging Lot hinaus und redete mit seinen Schwiegersöhnen, die seine Töchter nehmen sollten, und sprach: Macht euch auf, geht hinaus aus diesem Ort; denn der Herr wird diese Stadt verderben! Aber er war in den Augen seiner Schwiegersöhne wie einer, der scherzt.

When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the ▼

▼Or wrongdoing

punishment of the city.”

Als nun die Morgenröte aufging, drängten die Engel Lot und sprachen: Mache dich auf, nimm deine Frau und deine beiden Töchter, die hier sind, damit du nicht umkommst in der Bestrafung dieser Stadt!

But he hesitated. So the men ^cfgrasped his hand and the hand of his wife and the ▼

hands of his two daughters, because ^chthe compassion of the Lord was upon him; and they brought him out and put him outside the city.

Als er aber noch zögerte, ergriffen die Männer ihn und seine Frau und seine beiden Töchter bei der Hand, weil der Herr ihn verschonen wollte; und sie führten ihn hinaus und ließen ihn draußen vor der Stadt.

When they had brought them outside, ▼

one said, “ ^cjEscape for your life! ^ckDo not look behind you, and do not stay ▼

anywhere in the ^cmsurrounding area; escape to ^cnthe ▼

▼Lit mountain

mountains, or you will be swept away.”

Und es geschah, als sie sie hinausgeführt hatten, da sprach einer: Rette deine Seele! Und schaue nicht zurück; steh auch nicht still in dieser ganzen Umgegend! Rette dich ins Bergland ▼

▼gemeint ist das bergige Hochland östlich bzw. westlich der Jordanaue.

, damit du nicht weggerafft wirst!

But Lot said to them, “Oh no, my lords!

Aber Lot sprach zu ihnen: Ach nein, mein Herr!

Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your compassion, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the ▼

▼Lit mountain

mountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die;

Siehe doch, dein Knecht hat vor deinen Augen Gnade gefunden, und du hast mir große Barmherzigkeit erwiesen, dass du meine Seele am Leben erhalten hast. Aber auf das Bergland kann ich mich nicht retten; das Unglück könnte mich ereilen, sodass ich sterben müsste!

now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) ▼

▼Lit and my soul will live

so that my life may be saved.”

Siehe, jene Stadt dort ist so nahe, dass ich dahin fliehen könnte; und sie ist klein. Ach, lass mich dahin fliehen! Ist sie nicht klein? Nur dass meine Seele am Leben bleibt!

And he said to him, “Behold, I grant you this ▼

▼Lit thing

request also, not to overthrow the town of which you have spoken.

Da sprach er zu ihm: Siehe, ich habe dich auch in dieser Sache erhört, dass ich die Stadt nicht zerstöre, von der du geredet hast.

Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the town was named ▼

▼I.e., small

^cuZoar.

Eile, rette dich dorthin; denn ich kann nichts tun, bis du hineingekommen bist! — Daher wird die Stadt Zoar genannt.

The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

Und die Sonne ging auf über der Erde, als Lot nach Zoar kam.

Then the Lord ^cvrained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah from the Lord out of heaven,

Da ließ der Herr Schwefel und Feuer regnen auf Sodom und Gomorra, vom Herrn, vom Himmel herab,

and ^cwHe overthrew those cities, and all the surrounding area, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

und er zerstörte die Städte und die ganze Umgebung und alle Einwohner der Städte und was auf dem Erdboden gewachsen war.

But ▼

Lot’s wife, from behind him, ^cylooked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Und [Lots] Frau schaute zurück hinter seinem Rücken; da wurde sie zu einer Salzsäule.

Now Abraham got up early in the morning and went to ^czthe place where he had stood before the Lord;

Abraham aber begab sich früh am Morgen zu dem Ort, wo er vor dem Herrn gestanden hatte.

and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the surrounding area; and ▼

▼Lit he saw, and behold

behold, he saw ^dbthe smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a ▼

▼Lit kiln

furnace.

Und er blickte hinab auf Sodom und Gomorra und auf das ganze Land jener Gegend und sah sich um, und siehe, ein Rauch ging auf von dem Land, wie der Rauch eines Schmelzofens.

So it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the surrounding area, that ^ddGod remembered Abraham, and ^desent Lot out of the midst of the destruction, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

Und es geschah, als Gott die Städte in jener Ebene verderbte, da gedachte Gott an Abraham, und er führte Lot mitten aus dem Verderben, als er die Städte verderbte, in denen Lot gewohnt hatte.

Now Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters and ^dfstayed in the ▼

mountains, because he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.

Und Lot ging von Zoar hinauf und blieb mit seinen beiden Töchtern auf dem Bergland ; denn er fürchtete sich, in Zoar zu bleiben; und er wohnte mit seinen Töchtern in einer Höhle.

Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man ▼

▼Or in the land

on earth to ▼

▼Lit come in to

^djhave relations with us according to the custom of all the earth.

Da sprach die Ältere zu der Jüngeren: Unser Vater ist alt, und es ist kein Mann mehr auf der Erde, der zu uns kommen könnte nach der Weise aller Welt.

Come, ^dklet’s make our father drink wine, and let’s sleep with him so that we may keep ▼

▼Lit seed from our father

our family alive through our father.”

So komm, wir wollen unserem Vater Wein zu trinken geben und bei ihm liegen, damit wir von unserem Vater Nachkommenschaft erhalten!

So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.

So gaben sie ihrem Vater Wein zu trinken in derselben Nacht. Und die Ältere ging und legte sich zu ihrem Vater, und er erkannte es nicht, weder als sie sich legte, noch als sie aufstand.

On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Look, I slept last night with my father; let’s make him drink wine tonight too, then you go in and sleep with him, so that we may keep ▼

▼Lit seed from our father

our family alive through our father.”

Und es geschah am Morgen, da sprach die Ältere zu der Jüngeren: Siehe, ich bin gestern bei meinem Vater gelegen; wir wollen ihm auch diese Nacht Wein zu trinken geben, dass du hingehst und dich zu ihm legst, damit wir von unserem Vater Nachkommenschaft erhalten!

So they had their father drink wine that night too, and the younger got up and slept with him; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.

So gaben sie ihrem Vater auch in jener Nacht Wein zu trinken. Und die Jüngere machte sich auf und legte sich zu ihm, und er merkte es nicht, weder als sie sich legte, noch als sie aufstand.

And so both of the daughters of Lot conceived by their father.

So wurden die beiden Töchter Lots schwanger von ihrem Vater.

The firstborn gave birth to a son, and named him ^doMoab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.

Und die Ältere gebar einen Sohn, den nannte sie Moab; der wurde der Vater der heutigen Moabiter.

As for the younger, she also gave birth to a son, and named him Ben-ammi; he is the father of ▼

▼Heb Beney-Ammon

the sons of ^dqAmmon to this day.

Und die Jüngere gebar auch einen Sohn, den nannte sie Ben-Ammi; der wurde der Vater der heutigen Ammoniter.

Now Abraham journeyed from ^drthere toward the land of ^dsthe ▼

▼I.e., South country

Negev, and ▼

▼Lit dwelt

settled between Kadesh and Shur; then he lived for a time in ^dvGerar.

Abraham aber zog von dort in den Negev und wohnte zwischen Kadesch und Schur , und er hielt sich als Fremdling in Gerar auf.

And Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “ ^dwShe is my sister.” So ^dxAbimelech king of Gerar sent men and took Sarah.

^dyBut God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Behold, ^dzyou are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is ▼

hands I have done this.”

Hat er nicht zu mir gesagt: »Sie ist meine Schwester?« Und auch sie selbst hat gesagt: »Er ist mein Bruder!« Habe ich doch dies mit aufrichtigem Herzen und unschuldigen Händen getan!

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also ▼

^ehkept you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

Und Gott sprach zu ihm im Traum: Auch ich weiß, dass du dies mit aufrichtigem Herzen getan hast; darum habe ich dich auch bewahrt , dass du nicht gegen mich sündigst , und darum habe ich es dir nicht gestattet, dass du sie berührst.

Now then, return the man’s wife, for ^eihe is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”

So gib nun dem Mann seine Frau wieder, denn er ist ein Prophet ; und er soll für dich bitten , so wirst du am Leben bleiben. Wenn du sie aber nicht zurückgibst, so wisse, dass du gewiss sterben musst samt allem, was dir gehört!

So Abimelech got up early in the morning and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ▼

presence; and the people were greatly frightened.

Da stand Abimelech am Morgen früh auf und rief alle seine Knechte zusammen und sagte ihnen dies alles vor ihren Ohren; und die Leute fürchteten sich sehr.

^ekThen Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And ▼

how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom ^ema great sin? You have done to me ▼

things that ought not to be done.”

Und Abimelech rief Abraham und sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du uns das angetan, und was habe ich an dir gesündigt, dass du eine so große Sünde auf mich und mein Reich bringen wolltest? Du hast nicht mit mir gehandelt, wie man handeln soll!

And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What have you ▼

Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no ^epfear of God in this place, and ^eqthey will kill me because of my wife.

Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife;

Auch ist sie wahrhaftig meine Schwester; denn sie ist die Tochter meines Vaters, aber nicht die Tochter meiner Mutter, und so ist sie meine Frau geworden.

and it came about, when ^erGod caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is ▼

everywhere we go, ^eusay of me, “He is my brother.”’”

^evAbimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned his wife Sarah to him.

Then ^feAbraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his female slaves, so that they gave birth to children.

Abraham aber legte Fürbitte ein bei Gott. Da heilte Gott Abimelech und seine Frau und seine Mägde, dass sie wieder Kinder gebären konnten.

^ffFor the Lord had completely closed all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Denn der Herr hatte zuvor jeden Mutterleib im Haus Abimelechs fest verschlossen um Sarahs, der Frau Abrahams willen.

^fgThen the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had ▼

Abraham named his son who was born to him, the son whom Sarah bore to him, ^fkIsaac.

Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was ^fleight days old, as God had commanded him.

Now Abraham was ^fma hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

Und das Kind wuchs heran und wurde entwöhnt. Und Abraham machte ein großes Mahl an dem Tag, als Isaak entwöhnt wurde.

Now Sarah saw ^fqthe son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, ^frmocking Isaac.

Therefore she said to Abraham, “ ^fsDrive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be an heir with my son ▼

Do not be distressed because of the boy and your slave woman; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for ^fxthrough Isaac ▼

your descendants shall be named.

Aber Gott sprach zu Abraham: Es soll dir nicht leidtun wegen des Knaben und wegen deiner Magd! Höre in allem, was Sarah dir sagt, auf ihre Stimme! Denn in Isaak soll dir ein Same berufen werden.

And of ^fzthe son of the slave woman I will make a nation also, because he is your ▼

descendant.”

Doch ich will auch den Sohn der Magd zu einem Volk machen, weil er dein Same ist.

So Abraham got up early in the morning and took bread and a ▼

skin of water, and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba.

What is the matter with you, Hagar? ^ghDo not fear, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

Now it came about at that time that ^gpAbimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “ ^gqGod is with you in all that you do;

Abraham said, “I swear it.”

complained to Abimelech because of the well of water which the servants of Abimelech ^gthad seized.

Und Abraham stellte Abimelech zur Rede wegen des Wasserbrunnens, den die Knechte Abimelechs mit Gewalt genommen hatten.

And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor did I hear of it ▼

So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and ^gvthe two of them made a covenant.

Da nahm Abraham Schafe und Rinder und gab sie Abimelech, und sie machten beide einen Bund miteinander.

But Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

Und Abraham stellte sieben Lämmer beiseite.

Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set by themselves?”

Da sprach Abimelech zu Abraham: Was sollen die sieben Lämmer hier, die du beiseitegestellt hast?

He said, “You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand so that it may be a ^gwwitness for me, that I dug this well.”

Er antwortete: Du sollst sieben Lämmer von meiner Hand nehmen, damit sie ein Zeugnis für mich seien, dass ich diesen Brunnen gegraben habe!

Therefore he called that place ▼

^gyBeersheba, because there the two of them took an oath.

So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there ^gzhe called on the name of the Lord, the ^haEverlasting God.

And Abraham resided ^hbin the land of the Philistines for many days.

So Abraham got up early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place of which God had told him.

Da stand Abraham am Morgen früh auf und sattelte seinen Esel; und er nahm zwei Knechte mit sich und seinen Sohn Isaak; und er spaltete Holz zum Brandopfer, machte sich auf und ging hin an den Ort, den ihm Gott genannt hatte.

On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.

Am dritten Tag erhob Abraham seine Augen und sah den Ort von ferne .

Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”

Da sprach Abraham zu seinen Knechten: Bleibt ihr hier mit dem Esel, ich aber und der Knabe wollen dorthin gehen und anbeten, und dann wollen wir wieder zu euch kommen.

And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and ^hilaid it on his son Isaac, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.

Und Abraham nahm das Holz zum Brandopfer und legte es auf seinen Sohn Isaak. Er aber nahm das Feuer und das Messer in seine Hand, und sie gingen beide miteinander.

Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the ^hjlamb for the burnt offering?”

Da sprach Isaak zu seinem Vater Abraham: Mein Vater! Und er antwortete: Hier bin ich, mein Sohn! Und er sprach: Siehe, hier ist Feuer und Holz; wo ist aber das Lamm zum Brandopfer?

Abraham said, “God will ▼

provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

Und Abraham antwortete: Mein Sohn, Gott wird für ein Lamm zum Brandopfer sorgen! Und sie gingen beide miteinander.

Then they came to ^hlthe place of which God had told him; and Abraham built ^hmthe altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and ^hnlaid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Und als sie an den Ort kamen, den Gott ihm genannt hatte, baute Abraham dort einen Altar und schichtete das Holz darauf; und er band seinen Sohn Isaak und legte ihn auf den Altar, oben auf das Holz.

And Abraham reached out with his hand and took the knife to ▼

But ^hpthe angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

He said, “Do not reach out your hand against the boy, and do not do anything to him; for now ^hrI know that you ▼

fear God, since you have not withheld ^htyour son, your only son, from Me.”

Er sprach: Lege deine Hand nicht an den Knaben und tue ihm gar nichts; denn nun weiß ich, dass du Gott fürchtest , weil du deinen einzigen Sohn nicht verschont hast um meinetwillen!

Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering in the place of his son.

Da erhob Abraham seine Augen und schaute, und siehe, da war hinter ihm ein Widder, der sich mit seinen Hörnern im Gestrüpp verfangen hatte. Und Abraham ging hin und nahm den Widder und brachte ihn als Brandopfer dar anstelle seines Sohnes.

And Abraham named that place ▼

▼Heb YHWH-jireh; lit the Lord will see

The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord ^hvit will ▼

Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

and said, “ ^hxBy Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,
