Then Abraham arose from mourning before his dead, and spoke to the ^dsons of Heth, saying,

bei euch, dass ich meine Tote von meinem Angesicht entfernt begraben kann!

The sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,

Da antworteten die Hetiter dem Abraham und sprachen zu ihm:

“Hear us, my lord: you are a ▼

▼Lit prince of God

^lmighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will refuse you his grave for burying your dead.”

Höre uns, mein Herr , du bist ein Fürst Gottes mitten unter uns! Begrabe deine Tote in dem besten unserer Gräber. Niemand von uns wird dir sein Grab verweigern, damit du deine Tote darin begraben kannst!

So Abraham stood up and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Heth.

Da stand Abraham auf und verneigte sich vor dem Volk des Landes, vor den Hetitern.

And he spoke with them, saying, “If ▼

▼Lit it is with your soul

you are willing to let me bury my dead out of my sight, listen to me, and plead with ⁿEphron the son of Zohar for me,

Und er redete mit ihnen und sprach: Wenn es euer Wille ist, dass ich meine Tote von meinem Angesicht entfernt begrabe, so hört mich und bittet für mich Ephron, den Sohn Zohars,

that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in ▼

Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham ▼

so that the sons of Heth heard, ^rthat is, all who entered the gate of his city, saying,

Und Ephron saß mitten unter den Hetitern. Da antwortete Ephron, der Hetiter, dem Abraham vor den Söhnen Hets, vor allen, die durch das Tor seiner Stadt aus- und eingingen, und sprach:

“No, my lord, listen to me; ^sI give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.”

And Abraham bowed before the people of the land.

so that the people of the land heard, saying, “If you will only please listen to me; I will give the price of the field, accept it from me so that I may bury my dead there.”

Then Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,

“My lord, listen to me: a plot of land worth ▼

four hundred ^vshekels of silver --what is that between me and you? So bury your dead.”

Mein Herr, höre mich: Das Feld ist 400 Schekel Silber wert; was ist das schon zwischen mir und dir? Begrabe nur deine Tote!

Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham ^wweighed out for Ephron the silver which he had named in the ▼

presence of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency acceptable to a merchant.

Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household who was in ^ahcharge of all that he owned, “ ^aiPlease place your hand under my thigh,

and I will make you swear by the Lord, ^ajthe God of heaven and the God of earth, that you ^akshall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of ^althe Canaanites, among whom I live;

The servant said to him, “Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to this land; should I take your son back to the land from where you came?”

Da sprach der Knecht zu ihm: Vielleicht will aber die Frau mir nicht in dieses Land folgen — soll ich dann deinen Sohn wieder zurückbringen in das Land, aus dem du ausgezogen bist?

Then Abraham said to him, “ ^anBeware that you do not take my son back there!

Abraham sprach zu ihm: Hüte dich, meinen Sohn wieder dorthin zu bringen!

^aoThe Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, ‘ ^apTo your ▼

▼Lit seed

descendants I will give this land’--He will send ^arHis angel ahead of you, and you will take a wife for my son from there.

But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will ^asbe free of this oath of mine; ^atonly do not take my son back there.”

So the servant ^auplaced his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham, and swore to him concerning this matter.

Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and went out with a variety of ^avgood things of his master’s in his hand; so he set out and went to ▼

He made the camels kneel down outside the city by ^azthe well of water ▼

Da ließ er die Kamele sich draußen vor der Stadt lagern bei einem Wasserbrunnen am Abend, zur Zeit, da die [Jungfrauen ] herauszugehen pflegten, um Wasser zu schöpfen.

And he said, “ ^bcLord, God of my master Abraham, please ▼

▼Lit cause to occur for me

^begrant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

Behold, ^bfI am standing by the ▼

spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water;

now may it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and ▼

▼Lit she will say

who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’--may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

Wenn nun ein Mädchen kommt, zu der ich spreche: »Neige doch deinen Krug, dass ich trinke!«, und sie spricht: »Trinke! Und auch deine Kamele will ich tränken!« — so möge sie diejenige sein, die du deinem Knecht Isaak bestimmt hast; und daran werde ich erkennen, dass du an meinem Herrn Barmherzigkeit erwiesen hast!

And it came about, ^bibefore he had finished speaking, that behold, ^bjRebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of ^bkMilcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder.

Und es geschah, ehe er noch ausgeredet hatte, siehe, da kam Rebekka heraus, die Tochter Bethuels, der ein Sohn der Milka, der Frau Nahors, des Bruders Abrahams war; und sie trug einen Krug auf ihrer Schulter.

The young woman was ^blvery beautiful, a virgin; no man had ▼

had relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.

Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “ ^bnPlease let me drink a little water from your jar.”

And ^boshe said, “Drink, my lord”; then she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink.

Und sie sprach: Trinke, mein Herr! Und sie ließ den Krug sogleich auf ihre Hand nieder und gab ihm zu trinken.

Now when she had finished giving him a drink, ^bpshe said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they have finished drinking.”

Und als sie ihm zu trinken gegeben hatte, sprach sie: Auch deinen Kamelen will ich schöpfen, bis sie genug getrunken haben!

So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.

wrists weighing ten shekels in gold,

Und es geschah, als die Kamele alle getrunken hatten, da nahm er einen goldenen Ring, einen halben Schekel schwer, und zwei Armbänder für ihre Hände, zehn Schekel Gold schwer,

and he said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room for us to stay overnight at your father’s house?”

She said to him, “ ^bvI am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.”

Again she said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to stay overnight.”

Then the man ^bwbowed low and worshiped the Lord.

Da neigte sich der Mann und betete an vor dem Herrn,

And he said, “ ^bxBlessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned ^byHis kindness and His trustworthiness toward my master; as for me, ^bzthe Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.”

und er sprach: Gelobt sei der Herr, der Gott meines Herrn Abraham, der seine Gnade und Treue meinem Herrn nicht entzogen hat, denn der Herr hat mich den Weg zum Haus der Brüder meines Herrn geführt !

Then ^cathe young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.

Und die Tochter lief und berichtete dies alles im Haus ihrer Mutter.

Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was ^cbLaban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring.

Und Rebekka hatte einen Bruder, der hieß Laban. Und Laban lief rasch zu dem Mann draußen beim Brunnen.

When he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s ▼

wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, “ ▼

This is what the man said to me,” he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.

And he said, “ ^ceCome in, ^cfblessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside, since ^cgI have prepared the house, and a place for the camels?”

Und er sprach: Komm herein, du Gesegneter des Herrn, warum stehst du draußen? Ich habe das Haus geräumt und für die Kamele Platz gemacht!

So the man entered the house. Then ▼

^ciLaban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

So führte er den Mann ins Haus und zäumte die Kamele ab und gab ihnen Stroh und Futter, und Wasser, um seine Füße zu waschen und die Füße der Männer, die mit ihm waren,

But when food was set before him to eat, he said, “I will not eat until I have stated my business.” And he said, “Speak on.”

So he said, “I am ^ckAbraham’s servant.

The Lord has greatly ^clblessed my master, so that he has become ▼

rich; and He has given him ^cnflocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and slave women, and camels and donkeys.

Und der Herr hat meinen Herrn reichlich gesegnet , dass er groß geworden ist, denn er hat ihm Schafe und Rinder, Silber und Gold, Knechte und Mägde, Kamele und Esel gegeben .

Now ^cpmy master’s wife Sarah bore a son to my master ▼

▼Lit after she was old

in her old age, and ^crhe has given him all that he has.

Dazu hat Sarah, die Frau meines Herrn, in ihrem Alter meinem Herrn einen Sohn geboren; dem hat er alles gegeben, was ihm gehört.

^csMy master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live;

Und mein Herr hat einen Eid von mir genommen und gesagt: Du sollst meinem Sohn keine Frau nehmen von den Töchtern der Kanaaniter, in deren Land ich wohne;

but you shall go to my father’s house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.’

sondern ziehe hin zum Haus meines Vaters und zu meinem Geschlecht; dort nimm meinem Sohn eine Frau !

Then ^ctI said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman does not follow me.’

Ich sprach aber zu meinem Herrn: Aber vielleicht will mir die Frau nicht folgen?

And he said to me, ‘ ^cuThe Lord, before whom I have ^cvwalked, will send ^cwHis angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father’s house;

Da sprach er zu mir: Der Herr, vor dem ich wandle , wird seinen Engel mit dir senden und deinen Weg gelingen lassen, dass du meinem Sohn eine Frau aus meiner Verwandtschaft und aus dem Haus meines Vaters nimmst.

^cxthen you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’

Nur dann sollst du von dem Eid entbunden sein, wenn du zu meiner Verwandtschaft kommst und sie dir diese nicht geben; dann bist du von dem Eid entbunden, den du mir geschworen hast.

“So ^cyI came today to the spring, and said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I have been going ^czsuccessful;

So kam ich heute zum Wasserbrunnen und sprach: O Herr, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham, wenn du doch Gelingen geben wolltest zu meiner Reise, auf der ich bin!

behold, ^daI am standing by the ▼

spring, and may it be that the ▼

▼Or virgin

young unmarried woman who comes out to draw water, and to whom I say, “ ^ddPlease let me drink a little water from your jar”;

Siehe, ich stehe hier bei dem Wasserbrunnen. Wenn nun eine Jungfrau zum Schöpfen herauskommt und ich spreche: »Gib mir doch aus deinem Krug ein wenig Wasser zu trinken!«

and she says to me, “You drink, and I will draw for your camels also”--let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

und sie zu mir sagen wird: »Trinke, ich will deinen Kamelen auch schöpfen!«, so möge doch diese die Frau sein, die der Herr dem Sohn meines Herrn bestimmt hat!

“Before I had finished ^despeaking in my heart, behold, ^dfRebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew water, and ^dgI said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’

Ehe ich nun diese Worte ausgeredet hatte in meinem Herzen, siehe, da kommt Rebekka mit einem Krug auf ihrer Schulter und geht zum Brunnen hinab und schöpft. Da sprach ich zu ihr: »Gib mir doch zu trinken!«

She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘ ^dhDrink, and I will water your camels also’; so I drank, and she watered the camels also.

Und sie nahm den Krug sogleich von ihrer Schulter und sprach: »Trinke, und ich will deine Kamele auch tränken!« So trank ich, und sie tränkte auch die Kamele.

^diThen I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him’; and I put the ^djring on her nose, and the bracelets on her ▼

wrists.

Und ich fragte sie und sprach: »Wessen Tochter bist du?« Sie antwortete: »Ich bin die Tochter Bethuels, des Sohnes Nahors, den ihm Milka geboren hat.« Da legte ich einen Ring an ihre Nase und Armbänder an ihre Hände,

And I ^dlbowed low and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, ^dmwho had guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son.

und ich neigte mich und betete an vor dem Herrn und lobte den Herrn, den Gott meines Herrn Abraham, der mich den rechten Weg geführt hat, dass ich seinem Sohn die Tochter des Bruders meines Herrn nehme.

So now if you are going to ▼

▼Lit show kindness and truth to

^dodeal kindly and truthfully with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me now, so that I may turn to the right or the left.”

Wenn ihr nun meinem Herrn Liebe und Treue erweisen wollt, so sagt es mir; wenn nicht, so sagt es mir ebenfalls, dass ich mich zur Rechten oder zur Linken wende!

Then Laban and Bethuel replied, “ ^dpThe matter has come from the Lord; ^dqso we cannot speak to you bad or good.

Da antworteten Laban und Bethuel und sprachen: Diese Sache kommt von dem Herrn; darum können wir nichts gegen dich reden , weder Böses noch Gutes!

Here is Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”

Siehe, Rebekka ist vor dir! Nimm sie und ziehe hin, damit sie die Frau des Sohnes deines Herrn werde, wie der Herr geredet hat!

When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he ^drbowed himself to the ground ▼

before the Lord.

Und es geschah, als der Knecht Abrahams ihre Worte hörte, da verneigte er sich vor dem Herrn zur Erde.

And the servant brought out ^dtarticles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

Und der Knecht zog silberne und goldene Schmuckstücke und Kleider hervor und gab sie Rebekka; auch ihrem Bruder und ihrer Mutter gab er Kostbarkeiten.

Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they got up in the morning, he said, “ ^duSend me away to my master.”

Da aßen und tranken sie, er samt den Männern, die mit ihm waren, und sie blieben dort über Nacht. Aber am Morgen standen sie auf, und er sprach: Lasst mich zu meinem Herrn ziehen !

But her brother and her mother said, “ ^dvLet the young woman stay with us a few days, say ten; afterward she may go.”

Aber ihr Bruder und ihre Mutter sprachen: Lass doch das Mädchen [noch] einige Tage lang bei uns bleiben, wenigstens zehn, danach magst du ziehen!

However, he said to them, “Do not delay me, since ^dwthe Lord has prospered my way. Send me away so that I may go to my master.”

Da sprach er zu ihnen: Haltet mich nicht auf, denn der Herr hat meinen Weg gelingen lassen; lasst mich zu meinem Herrn ziehen!

And they said, “We will call the young woman and ▼

▼Lit ask her mouth

ask her.”

Da sprachen sie: Lasst uns das Mädchen rufen und fragen, was sie dazu sagt!

Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”

Und sie riefen Rebekka und sprachen zu ihr: Willst du mit diesem Mann ziehen? Sie antwortete: Ja, ich will mit ihm ziehen!

So they sent away their sister Rebekah and ^dyher nurse with Abraham’s servant and his men.

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
“May you, our sister,
^dzBecome thousands of ten thousands,
And may ^eayour ▼

The gate of those who hate them.”
