Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the Nile.

And behold, from the Nile seven cows came up, fine-looking and ▼

Then behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, ugly and ▼

thin, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile.

thin cows ate the seven fine-looking and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

Und die sieben hässlichen, mageren Kühe fraßen die sieben schönen, wohlgenährten Kühe. Da erwachte der Pharao.

But he fell asleep and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good.

Er schlief aber wieder ein und träumte zum zweiten Mal, und siehe, da wuchsen sieben Ähren auf einem einzigen Halm , die waren voll und gut;

Then behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.

und siehe, nach diesen, da sprossten sieben Ähren, die waren dünn und vom Ostwind versengt.

And the thin ears swallowed the seven plump and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

Now in the morning ^ehis spirit was troubled, so he sent messengers and called for all the ^fsoothsayer priests of Egypt, and all its ^gwise men. And Pharaoh told them his ▼

dreams, but ⁱthere was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh sent word and ^ucalled for Joseph, and they ^vhurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, ^wbut no one can interpret it; and ^xI have heard ▼

when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”

Und der Pharao sprach zu Joseph: Ich habe einen Traum gehabt, aber es kann ihn niemand deuten; nun habe ich über dich vernommen, dass du einen Traum zu deuten vermagst, wenn du ihn hörst.

Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “ ▼

^abIt has nothing to do with me; ^acGod will ▼

give Pharaoh an answer for his own good.”

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile;

fat and fine-looking came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass.

I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears of grain, full and good, came up on a single stalk;

and behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind sprouted up after them;

and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then ^aoI told it to the soothsayer priests, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”

And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s ▼

dreams are one and the same; ^aqGod has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do.

Da sprach Joseph zum Pharao: Was der Pharao geträumt hat, bedeutet dasselbe: Gott hat den Pharao wissen lassen, was er tun will.

The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the ▼

The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind ^aswill be seven years of famine.

It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: ^auGod has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.

Behold, ^avseven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt;

come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will ▼

ravage the land.

So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe.

sodass man nichts mehr merken wird von dem Überfluss im Land wegen der Hungersnot, die danach kommt; denn sie wird sehr drückend sein.

Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that ^bathe matter is confirmed by God, and God will quickly bring it about.

Dass aber der Pharao den Traum zweimal hatte, das bedeutet, dass die Sache bei Gott fest beschlossen ist und dass Gott es rasch ausführen wird.

So now let Pharaoh look for a man ^bbdiscerning and wise, and appoint him over the land of Egypt.

Und nun möge der Pharao nach einem verständigen und weisen Mann sehen und ihn über das Land Ägypten setzen.

Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers ▼

in charge of the land, and let him take a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt as a tax in the seven years of abundance.

Der Pharao möge handeln und Aufseher über das Land setzen; und er lasse in den sieben Jahren des Überflusses den fünften Teil [des Ertrages] erheben vom Land Ägypten.

Then have them ^bdcollect all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and have them guard it.

So soll man alle Nahrung dieser sieben künftigen guten Jahre sammeln und Getreide speichern zur Verfügung des Pharao, und diese Nahrung in den Städten aufbewahren.

Let the food be used as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”

Und diese Nahrung soll dem Land als Vorrat dienen für die sieben Hungerjahre, die im Land Ägypten eintreten werden, damit das Land durch die Hungersnot nicht zugrunde geht!

Then Pharaoh ^bntook off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and ^boput the gold necklace around his neck.

So he collected all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and put the food in the cities; he put in every city the food from its own surrounding fields.

When the seven years of plenty which had taken place in the land of Egypt came to an end,

and ^cithe seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

da brachen die sieben Hungerjahre an, wie Joseph vorausgesagt hatte. Und es entstand eine Hungersnot in allen Ländern; aber im ganzen Land Ägypten gab es Brot.

So when all the land of Egypt suffered famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; ^cjwhatever he says to you, you shall do.”

Und als das ganze Land Ägypten Hunger litt und das Volk zum Pharao um Brot schrie , da sprach der Pharao zu allen Ägyptern: Geht hin zu Joseph; was er euch sagt, das tut !

When the famine was spread over the entire face of the earth, then Joseph opened all ▼

▼Lit that which was in them

the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.

Und als die Hungersnot im ganzen Land herrschte, öffnete Joseph alle Speicher und verkaufte den Ägyptern [Getreide]; denn die Hungersnot nahm überhand im Land Ägypten.

Then the people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because ^clthe famine was severe in all the earth.

Now ^cmJacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?”

Then he said, “Look, ^cnI have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from ▼

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, ^csbecause the famine was also in the land of Canaan.

Now ^ctJoseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and ^cubowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

Joseph aber war Regent über das Land; er allein verkaufte dem ganzen Volk des Landes Korn. Darum kamen die Brüder Josephs und beugten sich vor ihm nieder, das Angesicht zur Erde gewandt.

When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and ^cvspoke to them harshly. He said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”

Als nun Joseph seine Brüder sah, erkannte er sie; aber er verstellte sich und redete hart mit ihnen und fragte sie: Wo kommt ihr her? Sie antworteten: Aus dem Land Kanaan, um Nahrung einzukaufen!

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although ^cwthey did not recognize him.

Und Joseph erkannte seine Brüder, sie aber erkannten ihn nicht .

And Joseph ^cxremembered the dreams which he ▼

had about them, and he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to look at the ▼

undefended parts of our land.”

And they said to him, “No, ^damy lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

undefended parts of our land!”

But they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with ^ddour father today, and ^deone is no longer alive.”

Yet Joseph said to them, “It is as I said ▼

by this you will be tested: ^dgby the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

Send one of you and have him get your brother, while you remain confined, so that your words may be tested, whether there is ^dhtruth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, you are certainly spies!”

Schickt einen von euch hin, damit er euren Bruder holt, ihr aber sollt in Haft behalten werden. So sollen eure Worte geprüft werden, ob ihr wahrhaftig seid; wenn aber nicht, dann seid ihr Kundschafter , so wahr der Pharao lebt!

So he put them all together in ^diprison for three days.

Und er setzte sie alle zusammen in Gewahrsam, drei Tage lang.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, “Do this and live, for ^djI fear God:

Am dritten Tag aber sprach Joseph zu ihnen: Wenn ihr am Leben bleiben wollt, so tut nun dies — denn ich fürchte Gott —:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in ▼

▼Lit the house of your prison

your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

Wenn ihr aufrichtig seid, so lasst einen von euch Brüdern hier gebunden im Gefängnis zurück; ihr anderen aber geht hin und bringt Getreide heim, um den Hunger eurer Familien zu stillen.

and ^dlbring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified, and you will not die.” And they did so.

Euren jüngsten Bruder aber bringt zu mir, damit eure Worte sich als wahr erweisen, und dann sollt ihr nicht sterben! Und sie handelten danach.

Then they said to one another, “ ^dmTruly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; for that reason this distress has happened to us.”

Sie sagten aber zueinander: Wahrlich, wir sind schuldig wegen unseres Bruders! Denn wir sahen die Drangsal seiner Seele, als er uns [um Erbarmen] anflehte; wir aber hörten nicht auf ihn. Darum ist diese Drangsal über uns gekommen!

Reuben answered them, saying, “ ^dnDid I not tell ▼

▼Lit you, saying,

you, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? ▼

▼Lit And behold, his blood also is required

^dqNow justice for his blood is required.”

Und Ruben antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Habe ich euch nicht zugeredet und gesagt: Versündigt euch nicht an dem Knaben? Aber ihr wolltet ja nicht hören! Und seht, nun wird sein Blut gefordert!

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

Sie wussten aber nicht, dass Joseph sie verstand; denn er verkehrte mit ihnen durch einen Dolmetscher.

Then he turned away from them and ^drwept. But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he ^dstook Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Und er wandte sich von ihnen ab und weinte , kehrte aber wieder zu ihnen zurück und redete mit ihnen. Darauf nahm er Simeon von ihnen weg und band ihn vor ihren Augen.

^dtThen Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, but also to return every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And that is what was done for them.

Und Joseph gab Befehl, dass man ihre Gefäße mit Getreide fülle und jedem sein Geld wieder in seinen Sack lege und ihnen auch Verpflegung mit auf die Reise gebe; und so machte man es mit ihnen.

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

Da luden sie ihr Getreide auf ihre Esel und gingen davon.

But when one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the overnight campsite, he saw his ^dumoney; and behold, it was in the opening of his sack!

Als aber einer seinen Sack öffnete, um in der Herberge seinem Esel Futter zu geben, da sah er sein Geld, und siehe, es lag oben im Sack!

So he said to his brothers, “My money has been returned, and look, it is right in my sack!” Then their hearts ▼

trembling to one another, saying, “ ^dxWhat is this that God has done to us?”

Und er sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Mein Geld ist mir zurückgegeben worden; seht, es ist in meinem Sack! Da verging ihnen der Mut, und sie sprachen zitternd einer zum anderen: Was hat uns Gott da getan!

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him everything that had happened to them, saying,

Als sie aber zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan kamen, erzählten sie ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war, und sprachen:

“The man, the lord of the land, ^dyspoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

Der Mann, der Herr des Landes ist, redete hart mit uns und behandelte uns als Kundschafter des Landes.

But we said to him, ‘We are ^dzhonest men; we are not spies.

Wir aber sagten: Wir sind aufrichtig und sind keine Kundschafter!

We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.’

Wir sind zwölf Brüder, Söhne unseres Vaters; einer ist nicht mehr, der jüngste aber ist gegenwärtig bei unserem Vater im Land Kanaan.

But the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘ ^eaBy this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

Da sprach der Mann, der Herr des Landes, zu uns: Daran will ich erkennen, ob ihr aufrichtig seid: Lasst einen eurer Brüder bei mir zurück und geht und nehmt mit, was ihr für eure Familien braucht;

But bring your youngest brother to me so that I may know that you are not spies, but ▼

▼Lit you are honest

honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may ^ectrade in the land.’”

und bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, damit ich erkenne, dass ihr keine Kundschafter, sondern aufrichtig seid! Dann will ich euch euren Bruder herausgeben, und ihr könnt ungehindert im Land verkehren .

Now it came about, as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, ^edevery man’s bag of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bags of money, they were afraid.

Und es geschah, als sie ihre Säcke ausleerten, siehe, da hatte jeder seinen Beutel mit Geld in seinem Sack! Als sie und ihr Vater ihre Beutel mit Geld sahen, erschraken sie.

And their father Jacob said to them, “You have ^eedeprived me of my sons: Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone, and now you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me.”

Und ihr Vater Jakob sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt mich meiner Kinder beraubt! Joseph ist nicht mehr, Simeon ist nicht mehr, und Benjamin wollt ihr [mir] nehmen; dies alles ist über mich gekommen!

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my ▼

care, and I will return him to you.”

Da sprach Ruben zu seinem Vater: Du kannst meine beiden Söhne töten, wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe! Übergib ihn nur meiner Hand, ich will ihn dir wiederbringen!

Jacob said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his ^ehbrother is dead, and he alone is left. ^eiIf harm should happen to him on the journey ▼

▼Lit on which you are going

you are taking, then you will ^ekbring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

Er aber sprach: Mein Sohn soll nicht mit euch hinabziehen; denn sein Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein übrig geblieben. Sollte ihm ein Unfall begegnen auf dem Weg, den ihr geht, so würdet ihr meine grauen Haare vor Kummer ins Totenreich hinunterbringen!

^elNow the famine was severe in the land.

Aber die Hungersnot lastete auf dem Land.

So it came about, when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back, buy us a little food.”

Und es geschah, als sie alles Korn aufgezehrt hatten, das sie aus Ägypten hergebracht hatten, da sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Geht und kauft uns wieder ein wenig Speise!

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, “ ^emThe man sternly warned ▼

▼Lit us, saying

us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’

Aber Juda antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Der Mann hat uns ernstlich bezeugt und gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!

If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

Wenn du nun unseren Bruder mit uns sendest, so wollen wir hinabziehen und dir Speise kaufen.

But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.’”

Wenn du ihn aber nicht gehen lässt, so ziehen wir nicht hinab; denn der Mann hat zu uns gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!

Then Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, ▼

▼Lit to tell

by telling the man whether you still had another brother?”

Da sprach Israel: Warum habt ihr mir das zuleide getan, dem Mann zu verraten, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt?

But they said, “The man specifically asked about us and our relatives, saying, ‘ ^eqIs your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ So we ▼

▼Lit told him according to these words

answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Sie sprachen: Der Mann forschte so genau nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft und sprach: Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr noch einen Bruder? Da gaben wir ihm Auskunft, wie es sich verhielt. Konnten wir denn wissen, dass er sagen würde: Bringt euren Bruder herab?

So Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me and we will arise and go, ^esso that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

Und Juda sprach zu seinem Vater Israel: Gib mir den Knaben mit, so wollen wir uns auf den Weg machen, damit wir leben und nicht sterben, wir und du und unsere Kinder!

^etI myself will take responsibility for him! You may demand him back from ▼

▼Lit my hand

me. If I do not bring him back to you and present him to you, then ▼

▼Lit I will be culpable before you all the days

you can let me take the blame forever.

Ich will für ihn bürgen, von meiner Hand sollst du ihn fordern; wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe und ihn vor dein Angesicht stelle, so will ich die Schuld tragen vor dir mein ganzes Leben lang.

For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice.”

Wenn wir nicht gezögert hätten, so wären wir gewiss jetzt schon zweimal zurückgekehrt!

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your ▼

▼Or vessels

bags, and carry down to the man ^exas a gift, a little ^eybalsam and a little honey, labdanum resin and ▼

▼Or resinous bark

myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

Da sprach ihr Vater Israel zu ihnen: Wenn es denn doch sein muss, dann macht es so: Nehmt in eure Säcke von den berühmtesten Erzeugnissen des Landes und bringt sie dem Mann als Geschenk : ein wenig Balsam , ein wenig Honig , Tragakanth und Ladanum, Pistazien und Mandeln.

And take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand ^fathe money that was returned in the opening of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

Nehmt auch den doppelten Betrag Geld mit euch und erstattet das zurückerhaltene Geld, das oben in euren Säcken war, eigenhändig wieder; vielleicht war es ein Versehen.

Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

Und nehmt euren Bruder mit, macht euch auf und kehrt zu dem Mann zurück!

and may ▼

▼Heb El Shaddai

^fcGod Almighty ^fdgrant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you ^feyour other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, ^ffif I am bereaved of my sons, I am bereaved!”

Und Gott , der Allmächtige, gebe euch Barmherzigkeit vor dem Mann, dass er euch euren anderen Bruder wieder mitgibt und Benjamin! Ich aber, wenn ich doch der Kinder beraubt sein soll, so sei ich ihrer beraubt!

So the men took ^fgthis gift, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they set out and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

Da nahmen die Männer dieses Geschenk und doppelt so viel Geld mit sich, und auch Benjamin; und sie machten sich auf und reisten hinab nach Ägypten und traten vor Joseph.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his ^fhhouse steward, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make preparations; for the men are to dine with me at noon.”

Als nun Joseph den Benjamin bei ihnen sah, sprach er zu seinem Verwalter : Führe die Männer ins Haus hinein, schlachte und bereite [ein Essen] zu; denn sie sollen mit mir zu Mittag essen!

So the man did as Joseph said, and ▼

▼Lit the man brought

brought the men to Joseph’s house.

Der Mann tat, wie ihm Joseph gesagt hatte, und führte die Männer in das Haus Josephs.

Now the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time that we are being brought in, so that he may ▼

attack us and ▼

▼Lit fall upon

overpower us, and take us as slaves with our donkeys.”

Da fürchteten sich die Männer , weil sie in das Haus Josephs geführt wurden, und sprachen: Man führt uns hinein wegen des Geldes, welches das erste Mal wieder in unsere Säcke gekommen ist, um über uns herzufallen und uns zu überwältigen und uns zu Sklaven zu machen samt unseren Eseln!

So they approached Joseph’s house steward, and spoke to him at the entrance of the house,

Darum wandten sie sich an den Mann, der über das Haus Josephs [gesetzt] war, und redeten vor der Haustür mit ihm,

and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food,

und sie sprachen: Bitte, mein Herr, wir sind schon einmal hier gewesen, um Speise zu kaufen;

and it happened when we came to the campsite, that we opened our sacks, and behold, ^fleach man’s money was in the opening of his sack, our money in ▼

▼Lit its weight

full. So ^fnwe have brought it back in our hand.

und es geschah, als wir in die Herberge kamen und unsere Säcke öffneten, siehe, da lag das Geld von jedem oben in seinem Sack, unser Geld nach seinem vollen Gewicht.

We have also brought down other money in our hand to buy food; we do not know who put our money in our sacks.”

Nun haben wir es wieder mit uns gebracht und anderes Geld dazu, um Speise zu kaufen; wir wissen nicht, wer unser Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat!

But he said, “Peace be to you, do not be afraid. ^foYour God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; your ▼

▼Lit your money had come to me

money was in my possession.” Then ^fqhe brought Simeon out to them.

Er sprach zu ihnen: Friede sei mit euch! Fürchtet euch nicht! Euer Gott und der Gott eures Vaters hat euch einen Schatz in eure Säcke gegeben. Euer Geld ist mir zugekommen! Und er brachte Simeon zu ihnen hinaus.

Then the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and ^frgave them water, and they ^fswashed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.

Und der Mann führte die Männer in das Haus Josephs und gab ihnen Wasser, dass sie ihre Füße waschen konnten, und gab ihren Eseln Futter.

So they prepared ^ftthe gift ▼

▼Lit until

for Joseph’s arrival at noon; for they had heard that they were to eat ▼

▼Lit bread

a meal there.

Sie aber machten das Geschenk bereit, bis Joseph zur Mittagszeit kam; denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten.

When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the gift which was in their hand, and they ^fwbowed down to the ground before him.

Als nun Joseph nach Hause kam, brachten sie ihm das Geschenk, das in ihren Händen war, ins Haus und beugten sich vor ihm zur Erde nieder.

Then he asked them about their welfare, and said, “ ^fxIs your old father well, of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”

Und er fragte nach ihrem Wohlergehen und sprach: Geht es auch eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr mir erzähltet? Lebt er noch?

And they said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” Then ^gbthey bowed down again ▼

▼I.e., great respect and honor to a superior

in homage.

Sie antworteten: Es geht deinem Knecht, unserem Vater, gut; er lebt noch! Und sie verneigten sich und beugten sich vor ihm nieder.

And as he raised his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, he said, “Is this ^gdyour youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” Then he said, “ ^geMay God be gracious to you, my son.”

Als er aber seine Augen erhob und seinen Bruder Benjamin sah, den Sohn seiner Mutter, fragte er: Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir gesprochen habt? Und er sprach: Gott sei dir gnädig , mein Sohn !

Joseph then hurried out, for ▼

▼Lit his compassion grew warm

^gghe was deeply stirred over his brother, and he looked for a place to weep; so he entered his chamber and ^ghwept there.

Danach aber zog sich Joseph zurück, denn sein Innerstes war aufgewühlt wegen seines Bruders; und er suchte einen Ort auf, wo er weinen konnte, und ging in sein Gemach und weinte dort.

Then he washed his face and came out; and he ^gicontrolled himself and said, “ ▼

▼Lit Set on bread

Serve the meal.”

Dann aber wusch er sein Angesicht, ging hinaus, überwand sich und sprach: Tragt das Essen auf!

Then they served him by himself, and ▼

▼Lit them

Joseph’s brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an ^glabomination to the Egyptians.

Und man trug ihm besonders auf und ihnen besonders und ebenso den Ägyptern, die mit ihm aßen, besonders; denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht mit den Hebräern zusammen essen, denn das ist für die Ägypter ein Gräuel .

Now they ▼

▼Lit sat

were seated before him, from ^gnthe firstborn according to his birthright to the youngest according to his youth, and the men looked at one another in astonishment.

Und sie saßen vor ihm, der Erstgeborene zuoberst und der Jüngste zuunterst, und die Männer schauten einander verwundert an.

Then he took portions to them from ▼

▼Lit his face

his own table, ^gpbut Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank freely with him.

Und man trug ihnen besondere Gerichte von dem auf, was vor seinem Angesicht gestanden hatte; das besondere Gericht für Benjamin aber war fünfmal größer als die besonderen Gerichte von ihnen allen. Und sie tranken und wurden fröhlich mit ihm.

^gqThen he commanded his house steward, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the opening of his sack.

Und [Joseph] befahl seinem Verwalter und sprach: Fülle den Männern die Säcke mit Speise, so viel sie tragen können, und lege das Geld eines jeden oben in seinen Sack!

And put my cup, the silver cup, in the opening of the sack of the youngest, and his money for the grain.” And he did ▼

as Joseph had told him.

Meinen Becher aber, den silbernen Becher, lege oben in den Sack des Jüngsten samt dem Geld für das Korn! Und er handelte nach dem Wort Josephs, das er gesprochen hatte.

▼Lit The morning was light

As soon as it was light, the men were sent away, they with their donkeys.

Und als der Morgen anbrach, ließ man die Männer ziehen samt ihren Eseln.

They had just left ^gtthe city, and were not far away, when Joseph said to his house steward, “Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?

Als sie aber zur Stadt hinausgekommen und noch nicht weit entfernt waren, sprach Joseph zu seinem Verwalter: Mache dich auf, jage den Männern nach, und wenn du sie eingeholt hast, sprich zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr Gutes mit Bösem vergolten?

Is this not that from which my lord drinks, and which he indeed uses for ^gudivination? You have done wrong in doing this!’”

Ist das nicht derjenige, aus dem mein Herr trinkt und aus dem er wahrzusagen pflegt? Da habt ihr Böses getan!

▼I.e., the steward

he overtook them and spoke these words to them.

Als er sie nun eingeholt hatte, redete er mit ihnen diese Worte.

And they said to him, “Why does my lord say such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!

Sie aber sprachen: Warum redet mein Herr solche Worte? Das sei ferne von deinen Knechten, so etwas zu tun!

Behold, ^gwthe money which we found in the opening of our sacks we have brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?

Siehe, wir haben dir das Geld , das wir oben in unseren Säcken fanden, aus dem Land Kanaan wieder zurückgebracht; wie sollten wir denn aus dem Haus deines Herrn Silber oder Gold gestohlen haben?

^gxWith whomever of your servants it is found, he shall die, and we also shall be my lord’s ^gyslaves.”

Bei welchem von deinen Knechten aber etwas gefunden wird, der soll sterben, und wir anderen wollen die Knechte deines Herrn sein!

So he said, “Now let it indeed be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, but the rest of you shall be considered innocent.”

Er aber sprach: Nach eurem Wort, so soll es sein! Bei wem er gefunden wird, der sei mein Knecht; ihr anderen aber sollt ungestraft bleiben!

Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.

Da ließ sogleich jeder seinen Sack zur Erde gleiten, und jeder öffnete seinen Sack.

And he searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest; and ^gzthe cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

Er aber fing an zu suchen beim Ältesten und kam bis zum Jüngsten. Da fand sich der Becher in Benjamins Sack.

Then they ^hatore their clothes in grief, and when each man had loaded his donkey, they returned to ^hbthe city.

Da zerrissen sie ihre Kleider, und jeder legte seine Last auf seinen Esel, und sie kehrten wieder in die Stadt zurück.

When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there, and ^hcthey fell down to the ground before him.

Und Juda ging mit seinen Brüdern in das Haus Josephs — denn er war noch dort—, und sie fielen vor ihm auf die Erde nieder.

Joseph said to them, “What is this thing that you have done? Do you not know that a man who is like me can indeed practice ^hddivination?”

Joseph aber sprach zu ihnen: Was ist das für eine Tat, die ihr begangen habt? Wusstet ihr nicht, dass ein solcher Mann, wie ich es bin, wahrsagen kann?

So Judah said, “What can we say to my lord? What words can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s ^heslaves, both we and the one in whose ▼

possession the cup has been found.”

Juda antwortete: Was sollen wir meinem Herrn sagen ? Was sollen wir reden, und wie sollen wir uns rechtfertigen? Gott hat die Schuld deiner Knechte gefunden ! Siehe, wir sind die Knechte unseres Herrn, wir und der, in dessen Hand der Becher gefunden worden ist!

But he said, “Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose ▼

▼Lit hand

possession the cup has been found, he shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”

Er aber sprach: Das sei ferne von mir, so etwas zu tun! Der Mann, in dessen Hand der Becher gefunden worden ist, soll mein Knecht sein; ihr aber zieht in Frieden zu eurem Vater hinauf!
