31And he said, “ kSwear to me.” So he swore to him. Then lIsrael bowed in worship at the head of the bed.

Israel’s Last Days

1 Now it came about after these things that
Lit one said to Joseph
Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons nManasseh and Ephraim with him.
2When

3Then Jacob said to Joseph, “

5Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; wEphraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as xReuben and Simeon are. 6But your children that you have fathered after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the

8 When Israel acsaw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9And Joseph said to his father, “ adThey are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, so that aeI may bless them.” 10Now afthe eyes of Israel were so

Lit he
Joseph brought them close to him, and he aikissed them and embraced them.
11And Israel said to Joseph, “I never

children as well!”
12Then Joseph
Lit made them come out
took them from his knees, and ambowed with his face to the ground.
13And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14But Israel reached out his right hand and placed it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although anManasseh was the firstborn. 15And he blessed Joseph, and said,
aoThe God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
apThe God who has been my shepherd
Lit from the continuance of me
all my life to this day,

17 When Joseph saw that his father awplaced his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and axhis

descendants shall become

a multitude of nations.”
20So bahe blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”

And so he put Ephraim before Manasseh.
21Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but bbGod will be with you, and bcbring you back to the land of your fathers. 22And I give you one

Genesis 50

Jacob Is Buried

1 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians dyembalmed Israel. 3Now forty days were
Lit fulfilled
required for
Or him
it, for
Lit so are fulfilled the days of embalming
such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians ecwept for him seventy days.

4 When the days of
Lit weeping
mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak
Lit In the ears of
to Pharaoh, saying,
5efMy father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave egwhich I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now then, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9Chariots with teams of horses also went up with him; and it was a very great company. 10When they came to the

Burial at Machpelah

12 And so his sons did for him as he had commanded them; 13for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in epthe cave of the field of Machpelah opposite Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a
Lit possession of a burial place
burial site from Ephron the Hittite.
14And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

15 When Joseph’s brothers had seen that their father was dead, they said, “ erWhat if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” 16So they sent instructions to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying, 17‘This is what you shall say to Joseph: “Please forgive, I beg you, the offense of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the offense of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18Then his brothers also came and esfell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? 20As for you, etyou meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about
Lit as this day
this present result, to keep many people alive.
21So therefore, do not be afraid; evI will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke

kindly to them.

Death of Joseph

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived 110 years. 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were exborn on Joseph’s knees. 24Joseph said to his brothers, “ eyI am about to die, but God will assuredly

25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will assuredly

26So Joseph died at the age of 110 years; and they fgembalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
