Genesis 6:9-22

9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a ^arighteous man, ^{▼▼Lit complete, perfect; or having integrity
,} ^cblameless in his generation. Noah ^dwalked with God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was ^ecorrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was ^ffilled with violence. 12 And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for ^{▼▼Lit all flesh
,} ^hhumanity had corrupted its way upon the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, “ ⁱThe end of ^{▼▼Lit all flesh}humanity has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of ^{▼▼Lit them}people; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of ^{▼▼I.e., Unknown species of tree}gopher wood; you shall make the ark with compartments, and ^{▼▼Or pitch}cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be ^{▼▼About 450 ft. long, 75 ft. wide, and 45 ft. high or 135 m, 23 m, and 14 m}three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a ^{▼▼Or roof}window for the ark, and finish it to a ^{▼▼One cubit is about 18 in. or 45 cm}cubit from ^{▼▼Lit above}the top; and put the door of the ark on the side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 Now behold, ^rI Myself am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 But I will establish ^sMy covenant with you; and ^tyou shall enter the ark--you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 ^uAnd of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 ^vOf the birds according to their kind, and of the animals according to their kind, of every crawling thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of every ^wfood that is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and them.” 22 ^xSo Noah did these things; according to everything that God had commanded him, so he did.

Genesis 7

The Flood

1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be ^yrighteous before Me in this generation. 2 You shall take ^{▼▼Lit to}with you ^{▼▼Lit seven seven}seven pairs of every ^abclean animal, a male and his female; and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and his female; 3 also of the birds of the sky, ^{▼▼Lit seven seven}seven pairs, male and female, to keep their ^{▼▼Lit seed}offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after ^aeseven more days, I will send rain on the earth for ^afforty days and forty nights; and I will wipe out from the face of the land ^agevery living thing that I have made.” 5 So ^ahNoah acted in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him.

6 Now Noah was ^aisix hundred years old when the flood of water ^{▼▼Lit was}came upon the earth. 7 Then ^akNoah and his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8 ^alOf clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that crawls on the ground, 9 they all went into the ark to Noah ^{▼▼Lit two two}by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 Now it came about after ^anthe seven days, that the waters of the flood ^{▼▼Lit were}came upon the earth. 11 In the ^apsix hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all ^aqthe fountains of the great deep burst open, and the ^{▼▼Or windows of the heavens}floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 ^asThe rain ^{▼▼Lit was}fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On this very same day ^auNoah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to ^{▼▼Lit its}their kind, and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, ^{▼▼Lit every bird, every wing}all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, ^axby twos of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed the door behind him.

17 Then the flood ^{▼▼Lit was}came upon the earth for ^azforty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. 18 The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark ^{▼▼Lit went}floated on the ^{▼▼Lit face}surface of the water. 19 And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains ^{▼▼Lit which were under all the heavens}everywhere under the heavens were covered. 20 The water prevailed ^{▼▼About 23 ft. or 6.7 m}fifteen cubits higher, ^beand the mountains were covered. 21 So ^bfall ^{▼▼Lit flesh}creatures that moved on the earth perished: birds, livestock, animals, and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind; 22 of all that was on the dry land, all ^bhin whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. 23 So He wiped out ^{▼▼Lit all existence}every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from mankind to animals, to crawling things, and the birds of the sky, and they were wiped out from the earth; and only ^bjNoah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark. 24 ^bkThe water prevailed upon the earth for 150 days.

Genesis 8

The Flood Subsides

1 But ^blGod remembered Noah and all the animals and all the livestock that were with him in the ark; and ^bmGod caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2 Also ^bnthe fountains of the deep and the ^{▼▼Or windows of the heavens}floodgates of the sky were closed, and ^bpthe rain from the sky was restrained; 3 and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end ^bqof 150 days the water decreased. 4 Then in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, ^brthe ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.

6 Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the ^bswindow of the ark which he had made; 7 and he sent out a raven, and it ^{▼▼Lit went out, going and returning}flew here and there until the water was dried up ^{▼▼Lit from upon}from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a ^{▼▼Lit dove from him}dove, to see if the water was low on the ^{▼▼Lit face}surface of the land; 9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of its foot, so it returned to him in the ark, for the water was on the ^{▼▼Lit face}surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took it, and brought it into the ark to himself. 10 So he waited another seven days longer; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 And the dove came to him in ^{▼▼Lit the time of evening}the evening, and behold, in its ^{▼▼Lit mouth}beak was a fresh olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was low on the earth. 12 Then he waited another seven days longer, and sent out ^cathe dove; but it did not return to him again.

13 Now it came about in the ^cbsix hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, that the water was dried up ^{▼▼Lit from upon}from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the ^{▼▼Lit face}surface of the ground had dried up. 14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth, that they may ^{▼▼Or swarm
,} ^cfbreed abundantly on the earth, and ^cgbe fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every animal, every crawling thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out ^{▼▼Or according to their kind}by their families from the ark.

20 Then Noah built ^cian altar to the Lord, and took some of every kind of ^cjclean animal and some of every clean bird and offered ^ckburnt offerings on the altar. 21 The Lord ^clsmelled the soothing aroma, and the Lord said ^{▼▼Lit to His heart}to Himself, “I will never again ^cncurse the ground on account of man, for ^cothe ^{▼▼Or inclination}intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; ^cqand I will never again ^{▼▼Lit strike}destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 “While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
^csSummer and winter,
And ^ctday and night
Shall not cease.”

Genesis 9

Covenant of the Rainbow

1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “ ^cuBe fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every animal of the earth and on every bird of the sky; on everything that crawls on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea. They are handed over to you. 3 Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I have given everything to you, ^cvas I gave the green plant. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, ^cwits blood. 5 I certainly will require ^{▼▼Lit your blood of your lives
,} ^cyyour lifeblood; ^{▼▼Lit from the hand of
,} ^dafrom every animal I will require it. And ^{▼▼Lit from the hand of}from every person, ^{▼▼Lit from the hand of}from every man as his brother I will require the life of a person.
6 “ ^ddWhoever sheds human blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For ^dein the image of God
He made mankind.
7 “As for you, ^dfbe fruitful and multiply;
^{▼▼Lit Swarm in the earth}Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now behold, ^dhI Myself am establishing My covenant with you, and with your ^{▼▼Lit seed}descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, every animal of the earth. 11 I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall ^djnever again be eliminated by the waters of a flood, ^dknor shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is ^dlthe sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for ^{▼▼Or everlasting generations}all future generations; 13 I have set My ^dnrainbow in the cloud, and it shall ^{▼▼Lit be for}serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall come about, when I make a cloud appear over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud, 15 and ^dpI will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and ^dqnever again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, then I will look at it, to remember the ^dreverlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and ^dsHam was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and ^dtfrom these the whole earth was ^{▼▼Lit scattered}populated.

20 Then Noah began ^{▼▼Lit to be a farmer}farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank some of the wine and ^dwbecame drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, ^dxsaw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it on both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were ^{▼▼Lit backward}turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,
“ ^dzCursed be Canaan;
^{▼▼I.e., The lowest of servants
,} ^ebA servant of servants
He shall be to his brothers.”

26 He also said,
“ ^ecBlessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And may Canaan be ^{▼▼Or their}his servant.
27 “ ^eeMay God enlarge Japheth,
And may he live in the tents of Shem;
And may Canaan be ^{▼▼Or their}his servant.”

28 Noah lived 350 years after the flood. 29 So all the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.

Genesis 10

Descendants of Noah

1 Now these are the records of the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood.

2 ^egThe sons of Japheth were ^ehGomer, Magog, ^eiMadai, ^ejJavan, Tubal, ^ekMeshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were ^elAshkenaz, ^{▼▼In 1 Chr 1:6, Diphath}Riphath, and ^enTogarmah. 4 The sons of Javan were Elishah, ^eoTarshish, Kittim, and ^{▼▼In 1 Chr 1:7, Rodanim}Dodanim. 5 From these the people of the coastlands of the nations ^{▼▼Or separated themselves}were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

6 ^erThe sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were ^esSeba, Havilah, Sabtah, ^etRaamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were ^euSheba and ^evDedan. 8 Now Cush fathered Nimrod; he ^{▼▼Lit began to be}became a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was ^{▼▼Or Babylon
,} ^eyBabel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of ^ezShinar. 11 From that land he went ^fato Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Mizraim fathered ^fbLudim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 ^fcPathrusim, Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines), and Caphtorim.

15 Canaan fathered ^fdSidon, his firstborn, and ^feHeth, 16 ^ffthe Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite, 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, the Sinite, 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. 19 ^fgThe territory of the Canaanite ^{▼▼Lit was}extended from Sidon ^{▼▼Lit as you go}going toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; and ^{▼▼Lit as you go}going toward ^fkSodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and by their nations.

21 Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 ^flThe sons of Shem were ^fmElam, Asshur, ^fnArpachshad, ^foLud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were ^fpUz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered ^fqShelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. 25 ^frTwo sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was ^{▼▼I.e., division}Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 ^{▼▼In 1 Chr 1:22, Ebal}Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all of these were the sons of Joktan. 30 Now their ^{▼▼Lit dwelling}settlement ^{▼▼Lit was}extended from Mesha ^{▼▼Lit as you go}going toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and according to their nations.

32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their descendants, by their nations; and ^fxout of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.

Genesis 11

The Tower of Babel

1 Now all the earth ^{▼▼Lit was one lip}used the same language and ^{▼▼Or few or one set of words}the same words. 2 And it came about, as they journeyed ^{▼▼Or from the east}east, that they found a plain in the land ^gbof Shinar and ^{▼▼Lit dwelt}settled there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and ^{▼▼I.e., in a kiln to harden them}fire them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used ^getar for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top ^gfwill reach into heaven, and let’s make ^gga name for ourselves; otherwise we ^ghwill be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth.” 5 Now ^githe Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the ^{▼▼Lit sons of mankind}men had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have ^{▼▼Lit one lip
,} ^glthe same language. And this is what they have started to do, and now nothing which they plan to do will be ^{▼▼Lit inaccessible to}impossible for them. 7 Come, ^{▼▼I.e., indicating united action, not a request
,} ^golet Us go down and there ^gpconfuse their ^{▼▼Lit lip}language, so that they will not understand one another’s ^{▼▼Lit lip}speech.” 8 So the Lord ^gsscattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore it was named ^{▼▼Or Babylon; cf. Heb balal, confuse
,} ^guBabel, because there the Lord confused the ^{▼▼Lit lip}language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Descendants of Shem

10 ^gwThese are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he fathered Arpachshad, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

12 Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and fathered Shelah; 13 and Arpachshad lived 403 years after he fathered Shelah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

14 Shelah lived thirty years, and fathered Eber; 15 and Shelah lived 403 years after he fathered Eber, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and fathered Peleg; 17 and Eber lived 430 years after he fathered Peleg, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and fathered Reu; 19 and Peleg lived 209 years after he fathered Reu, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and fathered Serug; 21 and Reu lived 207 years after he fathered Serug, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and fathered Nahor; 23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he fathered Nahor, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and fathered ^gxTerah; 25 and Nahor lived 119 years after he fathered Terah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

26 Terah lived seventy years, and ^gyfathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and ^gzHaran fathered ^haLot. 28 Haran died ^{▼▼Lit before the face of}during the lifetime of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in ^hcUr of the Chaldeans. 29 Abram and ^hdNahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was ^heSarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was ^hfMilcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah ^{▼▼Lit and the father of}and Iscah. 30 ^hhSarai was unable to conceive; she did not have a child.

31 Now Terah took his son Abram, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they departed ^{▼▼Lit with them}together from ^hjUr of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran and ^{▼▼Lit dwelt}settled there. 32 The days of Terah were 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
