six hundredth year of
Noah’s life, in the
second month, on the
seventeenth day of the
month, on
that day all the
fountains of the
great deep burst forth, and the
windows of the
heavens were
opened.

מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה לְחַיֵּי־
נֹחַ בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בְּשִׁבְעָֽה־

מַעְיְנֹת תְּהוֹם רַבָּה וַאֲרֻבֹּת הַשָּׁמַיִם נִפְתָּֽחוּ׃

So
Abraham rose
early in the
morning,
saddled his
donkey, and
took two of his
young men with him, and his
son Isaac. And he
cut the
wood for the
burnt offering and
arose and
went to the
place of which
God had
told him.
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ אֶת־
חֲמֹרוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת־
שְׁנֵי נְעָרָיו אִתּוֹ וְאֵת יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיְבַקַּע עֲצֵי עֹלָה וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־
הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר־
אָֽמַר־
לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Lift up your
staff, and
stretch out your
hand over the
sea and
divide it, that the
people of
Israel may
go through the
sea on
dry ground.

וְאַתָּה הָרֵם אֶֽת־
מַטְּךָ וּנְטֵה אֶת־
יָדְךָ עַל־
הַיָּם וּבְקָעֵהוּ וְיָבֹאוּ בְנֵֽי־

Then
Moses stretched out his
hand over the
sea, and the
Lord drove the
sea back by a
strong east wind all night and
made the
sea dry land, and the
waters were
divided.
וַיֵּט מֹשֶׁה אֶת־
יָדוֹ עַל־
הַיָּם וַיּוֹלֶךְ יְהוָה ׀
אֶת־
הַיָּם בְּרוּחַ קָדִים עַזָּה כָּל־
הַלַּיְלָה וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת־
הַיָּם לֶחָרָבָה וַיִּבָּקְעוּ הַמָּֽיִם׃

And as soon as he had
finished speaking all these words, the
ground under them split
apart.
וַיְהִי כְּכַלֹּתוֹ לְדַבֵּר אֵת כָּל־
הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַתִּבָּקַע הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם׃

they on their part
acted with
cunning and
went and made
ready provisions and
took worn-out sacks for their
donkeys, and
wineskins,
worn-out and
torn and
mended,
וַיַּעֲשׂוּ גַם־
הֵמָּה בְּעָרְמָה וַיֵּלְכוּ וַיִּצְטַיָּרוּ וַיִּקְחוּ שַׂקִּים בָּלִים לַחֲמוֹרֵיהֶם וְנֹאדוֹת יַיִן בָּלִים וּמְבֻקָּעִים וּמְצֹרָרִֽים׃

These
wineskins were
new when we
filled them, and behold, they have
burst. And these
garments and
sandals of ours are
worn out from the
very long journey.”
וְאֵלֶּה נֹאדוֹת הַיַּיִן אֲשֶׁר מִלֵּאנוּ חֲדָשִׁים וְהִנֵּה הִתְבַּקָּעוּ וְאֵלֶּה שַׂלְמוֹתֵינוּ וּנְעָלֵינוּ בָּלוּ מֵרֹב הַדֶּרֶךְ מְאֹֽד׃

And
God split open the
hollow place that is
at Lehi, and
water came out from it. And when he
drank,
his
spirit returned, and he
revived.
Therefore the
name of it was
called En-hakkore; it is at
Lehi to
this day.
וַיִּבְקַע אֱלֹהִים אֶת־
הַמַּכְתֵּשׁ אֲשֶׁר־
בַּלֶּחִי וַיֵּצְאוּ מִמֶּנּוּ מַיִם וַיֵּשְׁתְּ וַתָּשָׁב רוּחוֹ וַיֶּחִי עַל־
כֵּן ׀
קָרָא שְׁמָהּ עֵין הַקּוֹרֵא אֲשֶׁר בַּלֶּחִי עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

The
cart came into the
field of
Joshua of
Beth-shemesh and
stopped there. A
great stone was there. And they
split up the
wood of the
cart and
offered the
cows as a
burnt offering to the
Lord.
וְהָעֲגָלָה בָּאָה אֶל־
שְׂדֵה יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֵּֽית־
הַשִּׁמְשִׁי וַתַּעֲמֹד שָׁם וְשָׁם אֶבֶן גְּדוֹלָה וַֽיְבַקְּעוּ אֶת־
עֲצֵי הָעֲגָלָה וְאֶת־
הַפָּרוֹת הֶעֱלוּ עֹלָה לַיהוָֽה׃ ס

Then the
three mighty men broke through the
camp of the
Philistines and
drew water out
of the
well of
Bethlehem that was by the
gate and
carried and
brought it
to David. But
he would not drink of it. He
poured it out to the
Lordוַיִּבְקְעוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת הַגִּבֹּרִים בְּמַחֲנֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־
מַיִם מִבֹּאר בֵּֽית־
לֶחֶם אֲשֶׁר בַּשַּׁעַר וַיִּשְׂאוּ וַיָּבִאוּ אֶל־
דָּוִד וְלֹא אָבָה לִשְׁתּוֹתָם וַיַּסֵּךְ אֹתָם לַֽיהוָֽה׃

And
all the
people went up after him,
playing on
pipes, and
rejoicing with
great joy, so that the
earth was
split by
their noise.
וַיַּעֲלוּ כָל־
הָעָם אַֽחֲרָיו וְהָעָם מְחַלְּלִים בַּחֲלִלִים וּשְׂמֵחִים שִׂמְחָה גְדוֹלָה וַתִּבָּקַע הָאָרֶץ בְּקוֹלָֽם׃

turned around, and when he
saw them, he
cursed them in the
name of the
Lord. And
two she-bears came out of the
woods and
tore forty-two of the
boys.
וַיִּפֶן אַֽחֲרָיו וַיִּרְאֵם וַֽיְקַלְלֵם בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה וַתֵּצֶאנָה שְׁתַּיִם דֻּבִּים מִן־

When the
king of
Moab saw that the
battle was
going against him, he
took with him
700 swordsmen to
break through, opposite the
king of
Edom, but they
could not.
וַיַּרְא מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב כִּֽי־
חָזַק מִמֶּנּוּ הַמִּלְחָמָה וַיִּקַּח אוֹתוֹ שְׁבַע־
מֵאוֹת אִישׁ שֹׁלֵֽף חֶרֶב לְהַבְקִיעַ אֶל־
מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם וְלֹא יָכֹֽלוּ׃

And
Hazael said, “
Why does my
lord weep?” He
answered, “
Because I
know the
evil that you will
do to the
people of
Israel. You will
set on
fire their
fortresses, and you will
kill their
young men with the
sword and dash in
pieces their
little ones and
rip open their
pregnant women.”
וַיֹּאמֶר חֲזָאֵל מַדּוּעַ אֲדֹנִי בֹכֶה וַיֹּאמֶר כִּֽי־
יָדַעְתִּי אֵת אֲשֶׁר־
תַּעֲשֶׂה לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל רָעָה מִבְצְרֵיהֶם תְּשַׁלַּח בָּאֵשׁ וּבַחֻֽרֵיהֶם בַּחֶרֶב תַּהֲרֹג וְעֹלְלֵיהֶם תְּרַטֵּשׁ וְהָרֹתֵיהֶם תְּבַקֵּֽעַ׃

At that
time Menahem sacked Tiphsah and
all who were in it and its
territory from Tirzah on,
because they did
not open it to him. Therefore he
sacked it, and he
ripped open all the women in it who were
pregnant.
אָז יַכֶּֽה־
מְנַחֵם אֶת־
תִּפְסַח וְאֶת־
כָּל־
אֲשֶׁר־
בָּהּ וְאֶת־
גְּבוּלֶיהָ מִתִּרְצָה כִּי לֹא פָתַח וַיַּךְ אֵת כָּל־

Then a breach was
made in the
city, and
all the
men of
war fled by
night by the
way of the
gate between the two
walls, by the
king’s garden, and the
Chaldeans were
around the
city. And they
went in the
direction of the
Arabah.
וַתִּבָּקַע הָעִיר וְכָל־
אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה ׀
הַלַּיְלָה דֶּרֶךְ שַׁעַר ׀
בֵּין הַחֹמֹתַיִם אֲשֶׁר עַל־
גַּן הַמֶּלֶךְ וְכַשְׂדִּים עַל־
הָעִיר סָבִיב וַיֵּלֶךְ דֶּרֶךְ הָעֲרָבָֽה׃

Then the
three mighty men

wives, so that

left to him
except Jehoahaz, his
youngest son.
וַיַּעֲלוּ בִֽיהוּדָה וַיִּבְקָעוּהָ וַיִּשְׁבּוּ אֵת כָּל־
הָרְכוּשׁ הַנִּמְצָא לְבֵית־
הַמֶּלֶךְ וְגַם־
בָּנָיו וְנָשָׁיו וְלֹא נִשְׁאַר־
לוֹ בֵּן כִּי אִם־
יְהוֹאָחָז קְטֹן בָּנָֽיו׃

The
men of
Judah captured another
10,000 alive and
took them to the
top of a
rock and
threw them down from the
top of the
rock, and they were
all dashed to
pieces.
וַעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים חַיִּים שָׁבוּ בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה וַיְבִיאוּם לְרֹאשׁ הַסָּלַע וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּם מֵֽרֹאשׁ־
הַסֶּלַע וְכֻלָּם נִבְקָֽעוּ׃ ס

After these
things and these acts of
faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of
Assyria came and
invaded Judah and
encamped against the
fortified cities,
thinking to win them for himself.

And you
divided the
sea before them, so that they
went through the
midst of the
sea on
dry land, and you
cast their
pursuers into the
depths,
as a
stone into
mighty waters.
וְהַיָּם בָּקַעְתָּ לִפְנֵיהֶם וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ בְתוֹךְ־
הַיָּם בַּיַּבָּשָׁה וְֽאֶת־
רֹדְפֵיהֶם הִשְׁלַכְתָּ בִמְצוֹלֹת כְּמוֹ־
אֶבֶן בְּמַיִם עַזִּֽים׃

He
binds up the
waters in his thick
clouds,
and the
cloud is
not split open under them.
צֹרֵֽר־
מַיִם בְּעָבָיו וְלֹא־
נִבְקַע עָנָן תַּחְתָּֽם׃

He
cuts out channels in the
rocks,
and his
eye sees every precious thing.
בַּצּוּרוֹת יְאֹרִים בִּקֵּעַ וְכָל־

Behold, my
belly is like
wine that has
no vent;
like
new wineskins ready to
burst.

You split open springs and
brooks;
you dried up ever-flowing streams.

He
divided the
sea and let them
pass through it,
and made the
waters stand like a
heap.

split rocks in the
wildernessand gave them
drink abundantly as from the
deep.

As when
one plows and
breaks up the
earth,
so shall our
bones be
scattered at the
mouth of
Sheol.
כְּמוֹ פֹלֵחַ וּבֹקֵעַ בָּאָרֶץ נִפְזְרוּ עֲצָמֵינוּ לְפִי שְׁאֽוֹל׃

by his
knowledge the
deeps broke
open,
and the
clouds drop down the
dew.

He who
quarries stones is
hurt by them,
and he who

endangered by

“Let us
go up against
Judah and
terrify it, and let us
conquer it for ourselves, and
set up the
son of
Tabeel as
king in the
midst of it,”

to make for himself an
everlasting name,

smear it with
whitewash that it shall
fall!
There will be a
deluge of
rain, and
you, O
great hailstones, will
fall, and a
stormy wind break out.

Therefore thus says the
Lord God:
I will make a
stormy wind break out in my
wrath,
and there shall be a
deluge of
rain in my
anger, and
great hailstones in
wrath to make a
full end.

His
horses will be so
many that their
dust will
cover you. Your
walls will
shake at the
noise of the
horsemen and
wagons and
chariots, when he
enters your
gates as men
enter a
city that has been
breached.
מִשִּׁפְעַת סוּסָיו יְכַסֵּךְ אֲבָקָם מִקּוֹל פָּרַשׁ וְגַלְגַּל וָרֶכֶב תִּרְעַשְׁנָה חֽוֹמוֹתַיִךְ בְּבֹאוֹ בִּשְׁעָרַיִךְ כִּמְבוֹאֵי עִיר מְבֻקָּעָֽה׃

when they
grasped you with the
hand, you
broke and
tore all their
shoulders; and when they
leaned on you, you
broke and made
all their
loins to
shake.

בְּתָפְשָׂם בְּךָ בכפך תֵּרוֹץ וּבָקַעְתָּ לָהֶם כָּל־

set fire to
Egypt;
Pelusium shall be in
great agony;
Thebes shall
be breached,

Memphis shall face
enemies by
day.
וְנָתַתִּי אֵשׁ בְּמִצְרַיִם חוּל תחיל סִין וְנֹא תִּהְיֶה לְהִבָּקֵעַ וְנֹף צָרֵי יוֹמָֽם׃

I will
fall upon them
like a
bear robbed of her cubs;
I will
tear open their
breast,
and there I will
devour them like a
lion,
as a
wild beast would
rip them open.

sword;

Thus
says the
Lord:
“For
three transgressions of the
Ammonites,
and for
four, I will
not revoke the punishment,
because they
have ripped open
pregnant women in
Gilead,
that they
might enlarge their border.
כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה עַל־
שְׁלֹשָׁה פִּשְׁעֵי בְנֵֽי־
עַמּוֹן וְעַל־
אַרְבָּעָה לֹא אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ עַל־
בִּקְעָם הָרוֹת הַגִּלְעָד לְמַעַן הַרְחִיב אֶת־
גְּבוּלָֽם׃

And the
mountains will
melt under him,
and the
valleys will
split open,
like wax before the
fire,
like waters poured down a
steep place.
וְנָמַסּוּ הֶֽהָרִים תַּחְתָּיו וְהָעֲמָקִים יִתְבַּקָּעוּ כַּדּוֹנַג מִפְּנֵי הָאֵשׁ כְּמַיִם מֻגָּרִים בְּמוֹרָֽד׃

You
stripped the sheath from your
bow,
calling for many
arrows.

split the
earth with
rivers.
עֶרְיָה תֵעוֹר קַשְׁתֶּךָ שְׁבֻעוֹת מַטּוֹת אֹמֶר סֶלָה נְהָרוֹת תְּבַקַּע־

On that
day his
feet shall
stand on the
Mount of
Olives that lies
before Jerusalem on the
east, and the
Mount of
Olives shall be
split in
two from
east to
west by a
very wide valley, so that one
half of the
Mount shall
move northward, and the other
half southward.

וְעָמְדוּ רַגְלָיו בַּיּוֹם־
הַהוּא עַל־
הַר הַזֵּתִים אֲשֶׁר עַל־
פְּנֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם מִקֶּדֶם וְנִבְקַע הַר הַזֵּיתִים מֵֽחֶצְיוֹ מִזְרָחָה וָיָמָּה גֵּיא גְּדוֹלָה מְאֹד וּמָשׁ חֲצִי הָהָר צָפוֹנָה וְחֶצְיוֹ־
נֶֽגְבָּה׃
