‏ Acts 9:2

Damascus; a city of Syria, about a hundred and twenty miles north-east of Jerusalem.

To the synagogues; to the elders or rulers of the synagogues in Damascus, giving him full power to act in the matter, and requiring their cooperation.

Any of this way; the way of the Lord--any of his disciples.

Might bring them bound unto Jerusalem; to be tried by the Jewish council and punished. This would require the cooperation not only of the synagogues in Damascus, but of the civil authorities also, which was often granted upon solicitation.

‏ Acts 19:9

Divers were hardened; by resisting and rejecting the truth.

That way; the way of salvation which Paul preached.

The school; the room or place where Tyrannus taught. When the preaching of the gospel only hardens men, and leads them more bitterly to oppose the truth, it is sometimes best for ministers to leave them, and go where there is a greater prospect of success. The rejection of the gospel by some is thus made the occasion of salvation to others.
