Purification after Childbirth
1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Tell the Israelites: When a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a male child, a she will be ▼▼unclean: When something is clean, it is holy or acceptable to God. When it is unclean, it is unholy (such as an unclean spirit). The term can be used in a ritual sense to apply to moral standards for living.
unclean seven days, as she is during the days of her menstrual impurity. c 3The flesh of his foreskin d must be circumcised e on the eighth day. f 4She will continue in purification g from her bleeding h for 33 days. She must not touch any holy thing or go into the sanctuary until completing her days of purification. 5But if she gives birth to a female child, she will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstrual impurity. She will continue in purification from her bleeding for 66 days. 6“When her days of purification are complete, whether for a son or daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old male lamb for a ▼▼burnt offering(s): Or holocaust, an offering completely burned to ashes; it was used in connection with worship, seeking God's favor, expiating sin, or averting judgment.

offering. 7He will present them before the Lord and make ▼▼atone/ atonement: A theological term for God's provision to deal with human sin. In the OT, it primarily means purification. In some contexts forgiveness, pardon, expiation, propitiation, or reconciliation is included. The basis of atonement is substitutionary sacrifice offered in faith. The OT sacrifices were types and shadows of the great and final sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
