Matthew 9:1-8

1Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26

After getting into a boat, Jesus

2All at once some people

brought him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Be courageous, son! Your sins are forgiven.”Matt 8:10; Mark 2:3; Luke 5:18

3Then some of the scribes said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

4But Jesus knew

their thoughts and said, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?Ps 139:2; Matt 12:25; Mark 12:15; Luke 5:22; 6:8; 9:47; 11:17
5For which is easier: to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6But I want you to know
Lit. So that you will know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

Then he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!”

7So the man

got up and went home.
8When the crowds saw this, they became frightened

Luke 5:17-26

was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the law happened to be sitting near by. The people

had come from every village in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was present to heal them.

18Some men were bringing a paralyzed man on a stretcher. They were trying to take him into the house

saw their faith, he said, “Mister,

your sins are forgiven.”

21The scribes and the Pharisees began to argue among themselves, saying, “Who is this man who is uttering blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”Ps 32:5; Isa 43:25; Matt 9:3; Mark 2:6-7

22Because Jesus knew that they were arguing, he said to them, “Why are you arguing about this among yourselves?

23Which is easier: to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’? 24But I want you to know
Lit. So that you will know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then he said to the paralyzed man, “I say to you: Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!”
25So the man

immediately stood up in front of them and picked up what he had been lying on. Then he went home, praising God.

26Amazement seized all the people, and they began to praise God. They were filled with fear

and declared, “We have seen wonderful things today!”
