‏ John 12

1And six days before the passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where was that Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead. 2And they made a supper for him there: and Martha served, and Lazarus was one of the guests with him. 3And Mary took an alabaster box of perfume of choice spikenard, of great price; and anointed the feet of Jesus; and she wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the odor of the perfume. 4Then said Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, he that was about to betray him: 5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor? 6And this he said, not be cause he cared for the poor, but because he was thief, and held the purse, and carried what was put in it. 7But Jesus said: Let her alone; she hath kept it for the day of my burial. 8For the poor are always with you, but I am not with you always. 9And great multitudes of the Jews heard that he was there: and they came, not only on account of Jesus, but also that they might see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead. 10And the chief priests deliberated about killing even Lazarus: 11because many of the Jews, on his account, went and believed in Jesus. 12And the next day, a great multitude who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took boughs of palm-trees, and went out to meet him. And they cried, and said: Hosanna, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel! 14And Jesus found an ass, and sat upon it; as it is written 15Fear not, daughter of Sion. Behold, thy king cometh to thee; and he rideth upon a colt, the foal of an ass. 16These things understood not his disciples, at that time; but when Jesus was glorified, then his disciples remembered that these things were written of him, and that they did them to him. 17And the multitude that had been with him, testified that he had called Lazarus from the grave, and raised him from the dead. 18And for this reason, great multitudes went out to meet him, as they had heard that he wrought this sign. 19But the Pharisees said, one to another: Do ye see, that ye are gaining nothing? For, lo, the whole world is going after him. 20And there were also among the people, some who had come up to worship at the feast. 21These came, and approached Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him: My lord, we are desirous to see Jesus. 22Philip came and told Andrew; and Andrew and Philip told Jesus. 23And Jesus answered, and said to them: The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified. 24Verily, verily, I say to you, That a kernel of wheat, unless it fall and die in the ground, remaineth alone; but if it die, it produceth numerous fruits. 25He that loveth his life, will lose it; and he that hateth his life, in this world, will preserve it unto life everlasting. 26If any one is servant to me, he will come after me; and where I am, there also will my servant be. Him that serveth me, will the Father honor. 27Behold, now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? My Father, deliver me from this hour? But for this very cause, came I to this hour. 28Father, glorify thy name! And a voice was heard from heaven: I have glorified it; and I will glorify it again. 29And the multitude standing by, heard it; and they said: There was thunder. But others said: An angel spoke with him. 30Jesus answered, and said to them: This voice was not for my sake, but for yours. 31Now is the judgment of this world: now the ruler of this world is cast out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to me. 33And this he said, to show by what manner of death, he was to die. 34The multitude said to him: We have heard from the law, that the Messiah abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, that the Son of man is to be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? 35Jesus said to them: A short time longer, the light is with you. Walk, while ye have the light, lest the darkness overtake you. He that walketh in the dark, knoweth not whither he goeth. 36While the light is with you, confide in the light; that ye may be children of the light. These things said Jesus, and departed, and concealed himself from them. 37And although he wrought all these signs before them, they believed him not; 38that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, who said: My Lord; who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 39For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: 40They have blinded their eyes, and darkened their hearts; that they might not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and be converted; and I should heal them. 41These things spake Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him. 42And of the chiefs also, many believed on him; but on account of the Pharisees, they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the praise of men, more than the praise of God. 44And Jesus cried, and said: He that believeth in me, believeth not in me, but in him that sent me. 45And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me. 46I have come into the world, a light, that whoever believeth in me, might not abide in darkness. 47And whoever shall hear my words, and not observe them, I judge him not; for I did not come to judge the world, but to vivify the world. 48Whoever rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, there is one to judge him; the word which I speak, will judge him, at the last day. 49For I have not spoken from myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment, what I should speak, and what I should say. 50And I know that his commandment is life eternal. Therefore, these things which I speak, as my Father hath said to me, so I speak.
