Acts 13
First Missionary Journey
1Now there were at aAntioch, in the bchurch that was there, cprophets and dteachers: eBarnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of fCyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with gHerod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, hthe Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me iBarnabas and Saul for jthe work to which I have called them.” 3Then, when they had fasted and kprayed and llaid their hands on them, mthey sent them away. 4So, being nsent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to oCyprus. 5When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in pthe synagogues of the Jews; and they also had qJohn as their helper. 6When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a rmagician, a Jewish sfalse prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7who was with the tproconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8But Elymas the umagician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the vproconsul away from wthe faith. 9But Saul, who was also known as Paul, ▼▼ Or having just been filled
,
yfilled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, 10and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you zson of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked aathe straight ways of the Lord? 11“Now, behold, abthe hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. 12Then the acproconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at adthe teaching of the Lord. 13Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from aePaphos and came to afPerga in agPamphylia; but ahJohn left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14But going on from Perga, they arrived at aiPisidian ajAntioch, and on akthe Sabbath day they went into althe synagogue and sat down. 15After amthe reading of the Law and anthe Prophets aothe synagogue officials sent to them, saying, “Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.” 16Paul stood up, and apmotioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and aqyou who fear God, listen: 17“The God of this people Israel archose our fathers and ▼▼ Or exalted

atmade the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm auHe led them out from it. 18“For ava period of about forty years awHe put up with them in the wilderness. 19 ax“When He had destroyed ayseven nations in the land of Canaan, He azdistributed their land as an inheritance— all of which took baabout four hundred and fifty years. 20“After these things He bbgave them judges until bcSamuel the prophet. 21“Then they bdasked for a king, and God gave them beSaul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22“After He had bfremoved him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘ bgI have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My ▼▼ Lit wishes
will.’ 23 bi“From the descendants of this man, bjaccording to promise, God has brought to Israel bka Savior, Jesus, 24after blJohn had proclaimed before ▼▼ Lit the face of His entering
His coming a bnbaptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25“And while John bowas completing his course, bphe kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’ 26“Brethren, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of bqthis salvation has been sent. 27“For those who live in Jerusalem, and their brrulers, bsrecognizing neither Him nor the ▼▼ Lit voices
utterances of buthe prophets which are bvread every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28“And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they bwasked Pilate that He be ▼▼ Lit destroyed
executed. 29“When they had bycarried out all that was written concerning Him, bzthey took Him down from cathe ▼▼ Lit wood
cross and cclaid Him in a tomb. 30“But God cdraised Him from the dead; 31and for many days ceHe appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now cfHis witnesses to the people. 32“And we cgpreach to you the good news of chthe promise made to the fathers, 33that God has fulfilled this promise ▼▼ Late mss read to us their children
to our children in that He cjraised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘ ck You are My Son; today i have begotten You.’ 34“As for the fact that He clraised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘ cmI will give you the holy and ▼▼ Lit trustworthy
sure blessings of David.’ 35“Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘ co You will not ▼▼ Lit give
allow Your ▼▼ Or Devout or Pious
Holy One to ▼▼ Lit see corruption

served cuthe purpose of God in his own generation, cvfell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and ▼▼ Lit saw corruption
underwent decay; 37but He whom God cxraised did not ▼▼ Lit see corruption

Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39and ▼▼ Lit in or by
through Him dceveryone who believes is ▼▼ Lit justified

A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.’”
42As ▼
▼ Lit they
Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these ▼▼ Lit words
things might be spoken to them the next dmSabbath. 43Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the dnGod-fearing ▼▼ I.e. Gentile converts to Judaism
,
dpproselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in dqthe grace of God. Paul Turns to the Gentiles
44The next drSabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of ▼▼ One early ms reads God
the Lord. 45But when dtthe Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were ▼▼ Or slandering him
blaspheming. 46Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you dvfirst; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, dwwe are turning to the Gentiles. 47“For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘ dxI have placed You as a dy light for the Gentiles,That You may ▼

bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”48When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying eathe word of ▼

the Lord; and as many as echad been appointed to eternal life believed. 49And edthe word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. 50But eethe Jews incited the ▼▼ Or worshiping
