Judgment on Judah and Israel
1Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of aMoab and for fourI will not ▼
▼ Lit cause it to turn back, and so throughout the ch
revoke its punishment,Because he cburned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
2“So I will send fire upon Moab
And it will consume the citadels of dKerioth;
And Moab will die amid etumult,
With ▼
▼ Or shouts
war cries and the sound of a trumpet.3“I will also cut off the ▼
▼ Or executive officer
,
hjudge from her midstAnd slay all her iprinces with him,” says the Lord.
4Thus says the Lord,
“For three transgressions of jJudah and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they krejected the law of the Lord
And have not kept His statutes;
Their ▼
▼ Or false gods
,
mlies also have led them astray,Those after which their nfathers walked.
5“So I will osend fire upon Judah
And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
6Thus says the Lord,
“For three transgressions of pIsrael and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they qsell the righteous for money
And the needy for a pair of sandals.
7“These who ▼
▼ Or trample or, snap at the head of the helpless on the dust
pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the shelplessAlso tturn aside the way of the humble;
And a uman and his father ▼
▼ Lit go
resort to the same ▼▼ Possibly a harlot, or a temple prostitute
girlIn order to profane My holy name.
8“On garments xtaken as pledges they stretch out beside yevery altar,
And in the house of their God they zdrink the wine of those who have been fined.
9“Yet it was I who destroyed the aaAmorite before them,
▼
▼ Lit Whose height
Though his acheight was like the height of cedarsAnd he was strong as the oaks;
I even destroyed his adfruit above and his root below.
10“It was I who aebrought you up from the land of Egypt,
And I led you in the wilderness afforty years
▼
▼ Lit To possess
That you might take possession of the land of the ahAmorite.11“Then I airaised up some of your sons to be prophets
And some of your young men to be ajNazirites.
Is this not so, O sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.
12“But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
And you commanded the prophets saying, ‘You akshall not prophesy!’
13“Behold, I am ▼
▼ Or tottering
,
amweighted down beneath youAs a wagon ▼
▼ Or totters
is weighted down when filled with sheaves.14 ▼
▼ Or A place of refuge
,
ap“Flight will perish from the swift,And the stalwart will not strengthen his power,
Nor the aqmighty man save his ▼
▼ Lit soul
life.15“He who asgrasps the bow will not stand his ground,
The swift of foot will not escape,
Nor will he who rides the athorse save his ▼
▼ Lit soul
life.16“Even the ▼
▼ Lit stout of heart
bravest among the warriors will awflee naked in that day,” declares the Lord.
