Hebrews 9
The Old and the New
1Now even the first covenant had aregulations of divine worship and bthe earthly sanctuary. 2For there was ca ▼▼ Or sacred tent
tabernacle prepared, the ▼▼ Lit first
outer one, in which were fthe lampstand and gthe table and hthe ▼▼ Lit loaves of presentation
sacred bread; this is called the holy place. 3Behind jthe second veil there was a ▼▼ Or sacred tent
tabernacle which is called the lHoly of Holies, 4having a golden ▼▼ Or censer
,
naltar of incense and othe ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was pa golden jar holding the manna, and qAaron’s rod which budded, and rthe tables of the covenant; 5and above it were the scherubim of glory tovershadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. 6Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests uare continually entering the ▼▼ Lit first
outer ▼▼ Or sacred tent
tabernacle performing the divine worship, 7but into xthe second, only ythe high priest enters zonce a year, aanot without taking blood, which he aboffers for himself and for the ▼▼ Lit ignorance of the people
,
adsins of the people committed in ignorance. 8 aeThe Holy Spirit is signifying this, afthat the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the ▼▼ Lit first
outer tabernacle is still standing, 9which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly ahboth gifts and sacrifices are offered which aicannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, 10since they relate only to ajfood and akdrink and various alwashings, amregulations for the ▼▼ Lit flesh
body imposed until aoa time of reformation. 11But when Christ appeared as a aphigh priest of the aqgood things ▼▼ Two early mss read that have come
to come, He entered through asthe greater and more perfect ▼▼ Or sacred tent
tabernacle, aunot made with hands, that is to say, avnot of this creation; 12and not through awthe blood of goats and calves, but axthrough His own blood, He ayentered the holy place azonce for all, ▼▼ Or obtaining
having obtained bbeternal redemption. 13For if bcthe blood of goats and bulls and bdthe ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the ▼▼ Lit purity
cleansing of the flesh, 14how much more will bfthe blood of Christ, who through ▼▼ Or His eternal spirit
,
bhthe eternal Spirit bioffered Himself without blemish to God, bjcleanse ▼▼ One early ms reads our
your conscience from bldead works to serve bmthe living God? 15For this reason bnHe is the bomediator of a bpnew covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been bqcalled may brreceive the promise of bsthe eternal inheritance. 16For where a ▼▼ Or testament
covenant is, there must of necessity ▼▼ Lit be brought
be the death of the one who made it. 17For a ▼▼ Or testament
covenant is valid only when ▼▼ Lit over the dead
men are dead, ▼▼ Two early mss read for is it then...lives?
for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19For when every commandment had been byspoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, bzhe took the cablood of the calves and the goats, with cbwater and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both ccthe book itself and all the people, 20saying, cd“This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.” 21And in the same way he cesprinkled both the ▼▼ Or sacred tent
tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22And according to the ▼▼ Or Law, almost all things
Law, one may chalmost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and ciwithout shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 23Therefore it was necessary for the cjcopies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but ckthe heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ cldid not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of cmthe true one, but into cnheaven itself, now coto appear in the presence of God for us; 25nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as cpthe high priest enters cqthe holy place cryear by year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since csthe foundation of the world; but now ctonce at cuthe consummation of the ages He has been cvmanifested to put away sin ▼▼ Or by His sacrifice
,
cxby the sacrifice of Himself. 27And inasmuch as cyit is ▼▼ Lit laid up
appointed for men to die once and after this da comes judgment, 28so Christ also, having been dboffered once to dcbear the sins of many, will appear dda second time for desalvation dfwithout reference to sin, to those who dgeagerly await Him.
