Matthew 1
The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
1The ▼▼ Lit book
record of the genealogy of ▼▼ Heb Yeshua (Joshua), meaning The Lord saves
Jesus ▼▼ Gr Christos (Christ), Gr for Messiah, which means Anointed One
the Messiah, dthe son of David, ethe son of Abraham: 2Abraham ▼▼ Lit fathered, and throughout the genealogy
was the father of Isaac, ▼▼ Lit and..., and throughout the genealogy
Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of ▼▼ Gr Judas; names of people in the Old Testament are given in their Old Testament form
Judah and his brothers. 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, iPerez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of ▼▼ Gr Aram
Ram. 4Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6Jesse was the father of David the king. David kwas the father of Solomon by ▼▼ Lit her of Uriah
Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 7Solomon mwas the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of ▼▼ Gr Asaph
Asa. 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of ▼▼ Also Gr for Jehoram in 2 King 8:16; cf 1 Chron 3:11
Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9Uzziah was the father of ▼▼ Gr Joatham
Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of ▼▼ Gr Amos
Amon, and Amon the rfather of Josiah. 11Josiah became the father of ▼▼ Jehoiachin in 2 Kin 24:15
Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the tdeportation to Babylon. 12After the udeportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of ▼▼ Gr Salathiel
Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel was the father of ▼▼ Gr Abioud, usually spelled Abiud
Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, xwho is called ▼▼ Gr Christos (Christ)
the Messiah. 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the zdeportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the aadeportation to Babylon to ▼▼ Gr Christos (Christ)
the Messiah, fourteen generations. Conception and Birth of Jesus
18Now the birth of Jesus ▼▼ I.e. The Messiah
Christ was as follows: when His admother Mary had been ▼▼ The first stage of marriage in Jewish culture, usually lasting for a year before the wedding night, more legal than an engagement
betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was affound to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned ▼▼ Or to divorce her
,
ahto send her away secretly. 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ai“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for ▼▼ Lit that which
the Child who has been ▼▼ Lit begotten
conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21“She will bear a Son; and alyou shall call His name Jesus, for ▼▼ Lit He Himself
He anwill save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this ▼▼ Lit has happened
took place to fulfill what was apspoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 aq“Behold, the virgin shall be with ar child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name ▼▼ Or Emmanuel
Immanuel,” which translated means, at“God with us.” 24And Joseph ▼▼ Lit got up
awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 ▼▼ Lit and was not knowing her
but kept her a virgin until she awgave birth to a Son; and axhe called His name Jesus.
