‏ Psalms 44

Former Deliverances and Present Troubles.

For the choir director. A
Possibly Contemplative, or Didactic, or Skillful Psalm
Maskil of the sons of Korah.

1 O God, we have heard with our ears,
Our bfathers have told us
The cwork that You did in their days,
In the ddays of old.
2You with Your own hand edrove out the nations;
Then You fplanted them;
You gafflicted the peoples,
Then You hspread them abroad.
3For by their own sword they idid not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your jarm and the klight of Your presence,
For You lfavored them.

4You are mmy King, O God;
nCommand
Lit salvation
victories for Jacob.
5Through You we will ppush back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will qtrample down those who rise up against us.
6For I will rnot trust in my bow,
Nor will my sword save me.
7But You shave saved us from our adversaries,
And You have tput to shame those who hate us.
8In God we have uboasted all day long,
And we will vgive thanks to Your name forever.
Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interlude
Selah.

9Yet You xhave rejected us and brought us to ydishonor,
And zdo not go out with our armies.
10You cause us to aaturn back from the adversary;
And those who hate us abhave taken spoil for themselves.
11You give us as acsheep
Lit for food
to be eaten
And have aescattered us among the nations.
12You afsell Your people
Lit for no wealth
cheaply,
And have not
Or set a high price on them
profited by their sale.
13You make us a aireproach to our neighbors,
A scoffing and a ajderision to those around us.
14You make us aka byword among the nations,
A
Lit shaking of the head
,
amlaughingstock among the peoples.
15All day long my dishonor is before me
And
Lit the shame of my face has covered me
my aohumiliation has overwhelmed me,
16Because of the voice of him who apreproaches and reviles,
Because of the presence of the aqenemy and the avenger.

17All this has come upon us, but we have arnot forgotten You,
And we have not asdealt falsely with Your covenant.
18Our heart has not atturned back,
And our steps auhave not deviated from Your way,
19Yet You have avcrushed us in a place of awjackals
And covered us with axthe shadow of death.

20If we had ayforgotten the name of our God
Or extended our
Lit palms
hands to baa strange god,
21Would not God bbfind this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22But bcfor Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are considered as bdsheep to be slaughtered.
23 beArouse Yourself, why bfdo You sleep, O Lord?
Awake, bgdo not reject us forever.
24Why do You bhhide Your face
And biforget our affliction and our oppression?
25For our bjsoul has sunk down into the dust;
Our body cleaves to the earth.
26 bkRise up, be our help,
And blredeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
