Psalms 69
A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.
For the choir director; according to ▼▼ Or possibly LiliesShoshannim. A Psalm of David.
1 Save me, O God,For the bwaters have ▼
▼ Lit come to the soul
threatened my life.2I have sunk in deep dmire, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a ▼
▼ Lit flowing stream
,
fflood overflows me.3I am gweary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My heyes fail while I wait for my God.
4Those iwho hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would ▼
▼ Or silence
destroy me kare powerful, being wrongfully my enemies;lWhat I did not steal, I then have to restore.
5O God, it is You who knows mmy folly,
And nmy wrongs are not hidden from You.
6May those who wait for You not obe ashamed through me, O Lord ▼
▼ Heb YHWH, usually rendered Lord
God of hosts;May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,
7Because qfor Your sake I have borne reproach;
rDishonor has covered my face.
8I have become sestranged ▼
▼ Lit to
from my brothersAnd an alien to my mother’s sons.
9For uzeal for Your house has consumed me,
And vthe reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
10When I wept win my soul with fasting,
It became my reproach.
11When I made xsackcloth my clothing,
I became ya byword to them.
12Those who zsit in the gate talk about me,
And I am the ▼
▼ Lit songs
,
absong of the drunkards.13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, acat an acceptable time;
O God, in the adgreatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with ▼
▼ Or the faithfulness of Your salvation
Your saving truth.14Deliver me from the afmire and do not let me sink;
May I be agdelivered from ▼
▼ Lit those who hate me
my foes and from the ▼▼ Lit deep places of water
,
ajdeep waters.15May the ▼
▼ Lit stream
,
alflood of water not overflow meNor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the ampit shut its mouth on me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for anYour lovingkindness is good;
aoAccording to the greatness of Your compassion, apturn to me,
17And aqdo not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am arin distress; answer me quickly.
18Oh draw near to my soul and asredeem it;
atRansom me because of my enemies!
19You know my aureproach and my shame and my dishonor;
All my adversaries are ▼
▼ Or known to You
before You.20Reproach has awbroken my heart and I am so sick.
And axI looked for sympathy, but there was none,
And for aycomforters, but I found none.
21They also gave me ▼
▼ Or poison
,
bagall ▼▼ Or in
for my foodAnd for my thirst they bcgave me vinegar to drink.
22May bdtheir table before them become a snare;
And ▼
▼ Lit for those who are secure
,
bfwhen they are in peace, may it become a trap.23May their bgeyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their bhloins shake continually.
24 biPour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
25May their ▼
▼ Lit encampment
,
bkcamp be desolate;May none dwell in their tents.
26For they have blpersecuted him whom bmYou Yourself have smitten,
And they tell of the pain of those whom bnYou have ▼
▼ Lit pierced
wounded.27Add bpiniquity to their iniquity,
And bqmay they not come into brYour righteousness.
28May they be bsblotted out of the btbook of life
And may they not be ▼
▼ Lit written
,
bvrecorded with the righteous.29But I am bwafflicted and in pain;
▼
▼ Or Your salvation, O God, will set...
May Your salvation, O God, byset me securely on high.30I will bzpraise the name of God with song
And camagnify Him with cbthanksgiving.
31And it will ccplease the Lord better than an ox
Or a young bull with horns and hoofs.
32The cdhumble ▼
▼ Some mss and ancient versions read will see
have seen it and are glad;You who seek God, cflet your heart ▼
▼ Or live
revive.33For chthe Lord hears the needy
And cidoes not despise His who are prisoners.
34Let cjheaven and earth praise Him,
The seas and ckeverything that moves in them.
35For God will clsave Zion and cmbuild the cities of Judah,
That they may dwell there and cnpossess it.
36The ▼
▼ Lit seed
,
cpdescendants of His servants will inherit it,And those who love His name cqwill dwell in it.
