Therefore.The subject of this chapter, says Bp. Lowth, is the great increase and flourishing state of the church of God, by the conversion and accession of the heathen nations to it; which is set forth in such ample and exalted terms, as plainly shew that the full completion of this prophecy is reserved for future times. This subject is displayed in the most splendid colours, under a great variety of images highly poetical, designed to give a general idea of the glories of that perfect state of the church of God, which we are taught to expect in the latter times; when the fulness of the Gentiles shall come in, and the Jews shall be converted and gathered from their dispersions, and "the kingdom of this world shall become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ."

‏ Acts 10

1 Cornelius, a devout man, being commanded by an angel, sends for Peter,

11 who by a vision is taught not to despise the Gentiles;

17 and is commanded by the Spirit to go with the messenger to Caesarea.

25 Cornelius shows the occasion of his sending for him.

34 As he preaches Christ to Cornelius and his company,

44 the Holy Ghost falls on them, and they are baptized.

Cesarea.This city, once an obscure fortress called Strato's Tower, was built and superbly decorated by Herod the Great and called Cæsarea, in honour of Augustus Cæsar, to whom he dedicated it in the 28th year of his reign. It was situated on the shore of the Mediterranean, between Joppa and Dora, with a haven, rendered by Herod the most convenient on the coast: according to Ibn Idris and Abulfeda, 30 miles from Jaffa or Joppa, 32 from Ramlay, and 36 from Acco or Ptolemais; and, according to Josephus, 600 stadia, or 75 miles from Jerusalem, though the real distance is probably not more than 62 miles. Nothing now remains of the former splendour of Cæsarea: the supposed sites of the ancient edifices are mere mounds of indefinable form; the waves wash the ruins of the mole, the tower, and the port; the whole of the surrounding country is a sandy desert; and not a creature except beasts of prey, resides within many miles of this silent desolation.
